Mohegan Wolves News Release
Richmond, VA (June 22nd, 2002)- The Mohegan Wolves (3-9) went stride for stride with the defending American Conference champion Richmond Speed (9-2) for one half of play. Unfortunately for the Wolves three-second half turnovers stopped the Wolves dead in their tracks.
The first quarter saw Richmond take the opening possession and march 45 yards capped by a Kevin Harvey 15 yard touchdown run. Mohegan answered with a 49-yard drive highlighted by a Brandon Burnside 34 yard touchdown reception from Cable Davis.
Richmond added another touchdown early in the second before Burnside and Davis hooked up again, this time from 36 yards out. Kevin Harvey scored again putting the Speed up 21-14. A late 2nd quarter botched snap deep in Mohegan territory resulted in a fumble recovery by Al Ford which he returned 5 yards for a touchdown putting Richmond up 28-14 at the half.
Davis found Burnside right out of the gate in the 3rd quarter pulling the Wolves within 8 points, but that was as close as they would get as Richmond reeled off 34 unanswered points, defeating Mohegan 61-20, and proving why they are among the best teams in the af2.
Brandon Burnside again looked liked a serious contender for af2s offensive player of the year. He caught 7 passes for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns to go with 107 return yards. Cable Davis passed for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns on the evening. Carlos McLaurin led the Wolves defense with 6 tackles.
The Speed was led by WR/LB Kevin Harvey. The 2001 Ironman of the Year rushed for 3 touchdowns and caught another in the victory. He was named both Ironman of the Game and Game Most Valuable Player.
The Wolves return to the den this weekend when they host the Cape Fear Wildcats (9-2). Cape Fear is tied with Richmond for 1st place in the Atlantic Division. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm Friday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
