Albany Conquest (10-1) 54, Rochester Brigade (5-7) 42
ROCHESTER, N.Y. â The expansion Albany Conquest captured the Northeast Division championship with a 54-42 win over the Rochester Brigade Thursday night before 6,882 fans at the Blue Cross Arena. By winning the division, the Conquest is assured of homefield advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Albany also became the first team to win 10 games this season.
Rochester led 15-6 after the first quarter, but it was all Albany the rest of the way. The Conquest held the Brigade to 13 points through quarters two and three, while scoring 35 of its own. Rochester got within one score late in the fourth frame, but RYAN VENA found COREY HILL for a 28-yard strike with one minute left to seal the win for the Conquest.
For Albany, Vena completed 22-of-35 passes for 280 yards and six touchdowns. He also rushed the ball five times for 19 yards and a score. His main passing target was Hill, who had a season-high 16 catches for 226 yards and five touchdowns, earning MVP honors in the process. JOHN STUART was named Ironman of the Game, totaling three catches for 30 yards and one score. He also registered four tackles and two passes defended. The ADT Defensive Player of the Game award went to FB/LB MATT VITTENGL, who registered seven tackles (three solo), one tackle for loss and one pass breakup.
For the Brigade, QB MATT D'ORAZIO completed 24-of-37 passes for 256 yards and four scores while rushing the ball six times for 45 yards and a TD. League reception leader MARTINO THEUS caught 12 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns to give him 130 receptions on the season. Defensively, the Brigade was led by AARON FIX with six tackles (five solo), one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Augusta Stallions (10-1) 67, Columbus Wardogs (2-9) 51
AUGUSTA, Ga. â The Stallions scored 15 points in the final 52 seconds of the second quarter to ride a 48-30 advantage into the halftime break, and survived a fourth-quarter rally to top Columbus 67-51 in front of 3,945 people at the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Friday.
Augusta entered the end zone on its first five possessions as the teams went back-to-back on scoring drives through most of the first half. However, the Stallions' 36-point second quarter all but ended the Wardogs' hopes of an upset. Columbus put together a spirited fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 14 points, but it wasn't enough to get past the Stallions.
Augusta OS UNDRE WILLIAMS picked up MVP accolades, racking up 78 return yards, including a 51-yarder for a touchdown, and adding six catches for 49 yards and a score. CHRIS JOHNSON was the game Ironman after recording a safety that capped off a 15-point Augusta run at the end of the first half. Johnson totaled six catches for 72 yards and two touchdowns on offense and two tackles and a safety on defense. CLARENCE WILLIAMS was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with 4.5 tackles and a forced fumble. Columbus QB BILLY LUCKIE had 297 yards passing and four touchdowns while PHIL TAYLOR had nine receptions for 140 yards and two TDs.

Cape Fear Wildcats (9-2) 48, Greensboro Prowlers (3-9) 31
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. â The Cape Fear Wildcats improved to 9-2, winning their seventh straight game 48-31 over the Greensboro Prowlers Friday night before 5,303 fans at the Crown County Coliseum.
The Wildcats held the lead from start to finish. Greensboro got within three early in the third quarter, but consecutive MIKE GLUSKI-to-EDDIE MILLER scoring strikes put the game out of reach for the Prowlers. Miller, who totaled six catches for 73 yards and the two TDs, also added a rushing score and was named the MVP of the game.
Gluski (10-0 as a starter this season) completed 19-of-37 passes for 212 yards and three scores plus two rushing tallies. One of his passing TDs went to SETH GUTZ, who had four receptions for 70 yards. Gutz also had an assisted tackle and was named the game's Ironman. KENTON RICKERSON took the ADT Defensive Player of the Game award for his game-leading 6.5 tackle performance. He also had an interception and three passes defensed.
For the Prowlers, QB CHRIS WEIBEL went 17-of-32 passing for 186 yards and one score. His top target was ANTOINE CALLOWAY, who had six grabs for a game-high 81 yards. JASON GIBSON led the Prowlers with five tackles, one interception and two passes defensed.

Jacksonville Tomcats (5-6) 50, Pensacola Barracudas (5-6) 27
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Jacksonville limited Pensacola to a scoreless fourth quarter and scored 23 unanswered points to close out a 50-27 victory over the Barracudas in front of 7,480 fans at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum Friday.
Pensacola knotted up the score 27-27 with 8:22 left in the third, but JAMES ADDERLY's 25-yard touchdown reception with 1:28 left in the quarter sparked Jacksonville's offense into scoring the final 23 points of the game.
The Tomcats' defense picked off CHARLIE PETERSON four times to limit the Barracudas' offense to 27 points on the night. MVP and ADT Defensive Player of the Game MARCELLE HOUGH intercepted two of Peterson's passes and recorded 4.5 tackles. Hough's pickoff in the fourth quarter led to a JERRY CHAPMAN 22-yard field goal.
Adderly was the Ironman of the Game with an interception and three assists on defense and three catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. QB RASHARD CASEY spread the ball around, hitting seven different receivers for 238 yards.
JACK WALKER caught 11 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns to lead Pensacola. Peterson ended the night 20-of-46 for 225 yards and four touchdowns.

Norfolk Nighthawks (5-6) 42, Charleston Swamp Foxes (4-7) 41
NORFOLK, Va. â A botched extra point attempt set up a frantic finish as the Norfolk Nighthawks held on for a 42-41 win over the Charleston Swamp Foxes Saturday night before a crowd of 3,304 people at Scope Arena.
Behind 42-35 late in the game, the Swamp Foxes drove 35 yards for to set up a six-yard touchdown run by BEN CHRISTOPHER, leaving them only an extra point from tying the score 42-42. However, JUSTIN SKINNER's PAT attempt went wide right of the upright, leaving Charleston behind 42-41. Charleston attempted an onside kick that Norfolk recovered after several bounces slipped away from the Swamp Foxes. But the Nighthawks had to settle for a field goal attempt, and the kick hit the upright and fell wide. With one last chance to score, MIKE BATH hit MIKE CHANDLER, but Chandler was stopped in bounds at the 20-yard line as time expired.
TRAVIS BURNS earned MVP honors for Norfolk, putting in a fine offensive effort with four catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 55 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Burns also added 3.5 tackles of the defensive side of the ball. DESMOND WASHINGTON was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game after recording a game-high six passes defended and a team-high 5.5 tackles.
Christopher was the game's Ironman after giving the Swamp Foxes a chance to tie the game with his TD run with 48 seconds to play. Christopher finished with 18 yards rushing and two touchdowns on offense and 4.5 tackles on defense.

Richmond Speed (9-2) 62, Mohegan Wolves (3-9) 20
RICHMOND, Va. â The Richmond Speed reeled off 34 unanswered points to cap a 62-20 victory over Mohegan in front of 5,253 fans at the Richmond Coliseum Saturday.
BRANDON BURNSIDE pulled Mohegan to within eight points with 10:41 left in the third quarter, but Richmond exploded for the next 34 points to close out the game. MVP and game Ironman KEVIN HARVEY scored two of his four touchdowns in that span, and BRIAN EDMONDS returned an interception 43 yards for a score. Harvey finished with three rushing touchdowns, 151 all-purpose yards (27 rushing, 98 receiving and 26 on returns) and led the Speed with eight receptions. On defense, the Temple product added four tackles.
The Speed defense scored two touchdowns, forced four turnovers and had four sacks. AL FORD had the first defensive score for Richmond with a five-yard fumble recovery and Edmonds had the other on his 43-yard interception return. ADT Defensive Player of the Game RODNEY SLEDGE recorded two sacks. TYRONE LASTER added two interceptions for Richmond.
Burnside paced Mohegan with seven grabs for 99 yards and three TDs, as well as 107 yards on seven kick returns. QB CABLE DAVIS completed 13-of-24 passes for 146 yards and three scores. He was sacked three times.

Tallahassee Thunder (7-4) 32, Florida Firecats (6-5) 28
ESTERO, Fla. â MESIAH PORTER came to the Thunder's rescue for the second time this season, scoring the game's final two touchdowns, as Tallahassee outlasted Florida 32-28 in a defensive duel at TECO Arena in front of 5,533 fans.
On 4th-and-2 from the Thunder four-yard line, Porter batted down BRYAN SPARACINO's pass for ANTHONY DIXON at the goal line to wrap up the win with 50 seconds left. The victory put the Thunder back in the division lead, a game ahead of Florida.
Porter scored four of Tallahassee's five touchdowns, including a 25-yard pass for a score from VIC PENN. Penn completed 22-of-38 passes for 166 yards and two scores. CAINON LAMB had seven catches for 49 yards to lead the Thunder. ADESOLA BADON rounded out the Thunder's fine defensive performance with a game-high 9.5 tackles.
For Florida, JOHNNY FROST scored two more rushing touchdowns, giving him 12 on the season, a Firecats' season record. Frost added a sack, a forced fumble and a recovery on defense. Sparacino went 16-of-28 passing for 158 yards and two scores. ANTHONY DIXON led all receivers with five receptions for 50 yards and one TD.

New Haven Ninjas (4-6) 67, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (4-8) 59
NEW HAVEN, Conn. â The New Haven Ninjas kept their playoff hopes alive with a 67-59 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers Saturday night before 2,898 people at New Haven Coliseum.
Pioneer receiver JOHN KNUST caught a 20-yard pass from BRYAN SNYDER with 3:24 to play in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 61-59, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was unable to capitalize on its final possession after New Haven ran down the clock to under a minute. PETER CLARKE dashed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's last ditch effort when he intercepted Snyder and ran it back 17 yards to paydirt as time expired.
TERRENCE QUATTLEBAUM earned MVP recognition for New Haven with three touchdown catches for 43 yards and 131 all-purpose yards, including a 50-yard kickoff return for a score. RYAN BLAND was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with five tackles and an interception that led to a touchdown. As the game's Ironman, BRIAN WATSON had one receiving touchdown and registered two tackles on defense.
CHRIS BODEN was 17-of-32 for 217 yards and seven touchdowns in his second start for New Haven. Knust hauled in a game-high 166 receiving yards to lead the Pioneers. Of Knust's 11 receptions, four were for scores.

Roanoke Steam (6-6) 45, Carolina Rhinos (2-9) 43
ROANOKE, Va. â TACOMA FONTAINE pulled in six catches for 143 yards, including the game-winning reception on a tipped ball with 7.5 seconds remaining, as Roanoke pulled off a come-from-behind victory over the Carolina Rhinos, 45-43 in front of 2,301 fans Saturday.
Roanoke took its first lead of the game with 5:14 remaining, when MIKE VOLARVICH connected with JAMES EVERIDGE on a 28-yard TD pass. However, Carolina responded with NICK JOHNSON's one-yard touchdown reception, putting the Rhinos ahead 43-39 with just 15 seconds left. On the next possession, Volarvich threw up a prayer, only to have it answered when game MVP Fontaine came down with the ball in the end zone after it had been tipped.
Fontaine led all Roanoke receivers with six catches for 143 yards. QB MICHAEL THOMAS, who split time with Volarvich, went 7-of-16 for 126 yards. Volarvich completed 6-of-9 passes for 119 yards and three scores. For Carolina, CALEB SLOVER totaled 24 completions for 289 yards and six TDs. His main target was Johnson, who led all receivers, catching 14 balls for 181 yards with four scores.
JYKINE BRADLEY was named Ironman of the Game after recording six tackles and intercepting a Slover pass late in the game to end a Carolina scoring drive. ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors went to Roanoke's TOBY CHAMPION.

Arkansas Twisters (6-5) 102, Tulsa Talons (9-2) 63
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. â Faced with a must-win situation, the Arkansas Twisters responded with a gargantuan effort in overwhelming the Tulsa Talons 102-63 before 6,927 fans at Alltel Arena. The combined 165 points eclipsed the previous af2 record of 160 set by Birmingham and Tallahassee on June 2, 2000. Arkansas, which missed a two-point conversion with 15 seconds left, finished one point short of tying the single-game record of 103 set by Quad City on May 26, 2000.
Arkansas tallied 15 touchdowns, scoring nearly every way possible. There were four rushing touchdowns, nine passing touchdowns, a kickoff return and an interception return. Four TDs came in the final 3:22, including three in the final minute of a 27-8 game-closing run. The 60-second hat trick included a five-yard D.J. CRANE run, a 29-yard DEADERICK CAIL interception return and a 14-yard pass from RICKY HEBERT to LENNIE JOHNSON.
Hebert, the game MVP, threw for a team-record 387 yards and nine touchdowns. He was 18-of-28, throwing no interceptions for the second consecutive week. Johnson had seven receptions for 111 yards and four touchdowns and another 105 yards on kick returns. He added 7.5 tackles and an interception on defense to earn Ironman honors. ANTHONY EUBANKS totaled 112 receiving yards and two TDs. KEVIN WILLIAMS added 87 receiving yards and three scores as well as a kickoff return for TD in the fourth quarter.
Cail pulled in three interceptions overall to be named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game. SEAN LOVE led the Talons with 13 receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns, adding another 64 yards on kickoff returns. Tulsa's MITCH ALLNER finished the game with eight receptions for 96 yards and four touchdowns, a PAT return for two points and 80 yards on four kickoff returns. Tulsa starting QB ANTHONY BUICH passed for 268 yards and six touchdowns, but threw three interceptions.

Macon Knights (10-2) 71, Birmingham Steeldogs (8-3) 61
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. â The Birmingham Steeldogs' quest to extend their home winning streak to 12 games came up short on Saturday night as Macon beat Birmingham 71-61, in front of 6,466 fans at the BJCC Arena.
JOHN RAYBORN guided the Knights to a 28-14 halftime lead and hooked up with JAQUEZ RUMPH early in the third quarter for the first of five 21-point bulges for Macon. Both teams scored 27 points in the third period, including kickoff returns by Rumph (55 yards), Macon's NORMAN MASON (47 yards) and Birmingham's HERMAN BELL (56 yards).
In the fourth quarter, Birmingham closed within 62-54 on a 49-yard pass from MONTRESSA KIRBY to ANTHONY JORDAN, but WESLEY WILSON's 25-yard field goal and a five-yard TD run by RENDELL JACKSON clinched the Knights' victory.
Rayborn finished 25-of-29 for 222 yards and five touchdowns. He was named the game MVP. Four of his touchdown passes were caught by Rumph, who had 12 receptions for 128 yards on the night. Mason was the Ironman of the Game, registering 2.5 tackles in addition to his kick return TD. DENARIO SMALLS led the Knights' defensive unit with 4.5 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception.
Birmingham's MONTRESSA KIRBY completed 18-of-30 passes for 224 yards and seven touchdowns. WAYNE THOMAS totaled 87 receiving yards and two TDs.

Bossier City Battle Wings (7-5) 47, Wichita Stealth (4-8) 46
BOSSIER CITY, La. â The Bossier City Battle Wings remained in a select group of arenafootball2 teams with perfect home records in 2002 with a 47-46 win over the Wichita Stealth on Saturday night in front of a season-high 4,694 fans at the CenturyTel Center.
In a game that featured five ties and no second-half lead of more than seven points, the Battle Wings went on top for good with just over five minutes remaining on a 19-yard touchdown catch by LARRY NIXON and a successful conversion by SCOTT TYNER. Wichita scored three minutes later when RON LOPEZ hooked up with XAVIER PATTERSON for a 20-yard score, but PAUL AGUILAR pushed the conversion wide right. The Battle Wings managed to run down the clock and escape with the one-point victory.
Nixon, the game MVP, led the Battle Wings with seven receptions for 84 yards, a touchdown and a 48-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. DENNIS SHORT was the game's Ironman, recording an assisted tackle and fumble recovery on defense, and catching six passes for 52 yards and two touchdowns on offense. VAL MORRIS was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game with four tackles, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. The Stealth fumbled four times in the game, losing all four.
Lopez ended the night 26-of-33 for 368 yards and six touchdowns while Bossier City QB SHERARD POTEETE had a season-high 47 yards and two touchdowns rushing. Poteete passed for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

Louisville Fire (2-9) 51, Memphis Xplorers (4-8) 50
DESOTO, Miss. â Louisville avenged a 60-46 loss to Memphis earlier in the season, earning its first road win of the season with a 51-50 victory at the DeSoto Civic Center.
Memphis took an early 12-0 lead on CARLOS MCNEARY's 45-yard TD catch and a 47-yard interception return for touchdown by Edward Smith. But Louisville rallied to take the lead for good when MATT HICKS dove into the end zone with eight seconds left in the first half to give the Fire a 25-24 halftime edge. Louisville took its biggest lead at 45-30 when ANTHONY STALLINGS rushed for his second touchdown of the night with 13:24 left in the game.
TIM LESTER hooked up with McNeary on a 15-yard touchdown pass that made it 45-38, setting up a wild finish that saw the teams combine for 26 points in the last 56 seconds. Lester's quarterback sneak for a touchdown brought the Xplorers within one at 45-44. Louisville drove back down the field and extended its lead to 51-44 with 35 seconds to play when Hicks found ANTHONY PAYTON for a 13-yard strike. Just seven seconds later, McNeary scored on a 17-yard catch, setting up a potential game-winning two-point conversion that failed when Lester's pass sailed incomplete. The Xplorers failed on five of six two-point conversion attempts in the game.
Payton finished the game with 10 receptions for 180 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Fire. Hicks was 21-of-33 for 270 yards and four touchdowns. Lester passed for 244 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. McNeary caught five passes for 100 yards and three scores. Smith led the Xplorers' defensive effort with three tackles, a fumble recovery and his interception return TD.

Quad City Steamwheelers (7-4) 48, Tennessee Valley Vipers (9-2) 38
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. â The Tennessee Valley Vipers remain snakebit at home against the Quad City Steamwheelers. For the third time in three years, the Steamwheelers rolled into the Von Braun Center and beat the Vipers, this time 48-38 in front of 5,338 fans Saturday night.
Quad City led the entire game except for an early 7-7 tie. A COREY BERN fumble recovery in Tennessee Valley's end zone gave Quad City a 27-17 halftime advantage, a margin that ballooned to 48-23 on the strength of 21 straight Steamwheeler points following KELLY FIELDS' 14-yard touchdown catch for the Vipers. A pair of 12-yard touchdown passes from MIKE CAWLEY to CHRIS ANTHONY and IRA GOOCH sandwiched another end zone fumble recovery for TD, this one by Quad City's DERRICK DAVISON.
The Vipers scored two late touchdowns behind reserve QB JERMAINE ALFRED â the first a five-yard pass to REGGIE WORTHY and the second a 45-yarder to Fields. Alfred totaled 138 passing yards and three TDs with one interception. Fields led all receivers with seven catches for 125 yards and two scores.
Cawley passed for 157 yards and four touchdowns with three INTs. Gooch led Quad City with six catches for 83 yards and five kickoff returns for 82 yards. Quad City's JEFF HEWITT caught four passes for 39 yards and a touchdown and added two tackles and a fumble recovery on defense to earn Ironman honors. He was named the game's Most Valuable Player. Tennessee Valley DS KELLY SNELL, who had three interceptions, seven tackles and two pass breakups, was selected the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.

Bakersfield Blitz (7-4) 56, Hawaiian Islanders (2-10) 48
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. â GABE CRECION recovered an onside kick with less than a minute to play to seal a 56-48 victory over the Hawaiian Islanders Saturday in front of 5,217 fans at the Centennial Garden.
The teams traded touchdowns until the Blitz scored on back-to-back possessions at the end of the second quarter and start of the third. The two GERRICK BIVINS TD catches gave Bakersfield a 35-21 lead. Hawaii clawed back to within 42-41 early in the fourth period on two DARNELL ARCENEAUX touchdown runs and a 16-yard Arceneaux pass to MIKE TILLIS. But CHAD ELLIOTT 's scoring strikes to NATHAN MUNSON and Bivins gave Bakersfield the breathing room it needed for the win.
Bivins, the game MVP, finished the game with 12 receptions for 157 yards and five touchdowns while Elliott completed 20-of-25 passes for 231 yards and eight touchdowns. Hawaii's Arceneaux scampered for a game-high 39 yards rushing and tied an af2 record with five rushing TDs. He had 213 yards and two TDs through the air, with both scores going to Tillis, who totaled 80 receiving yards overall.
Crecion was named the Ironman of the Game with his onside recovery and a sack on defense while FB/LB NATHAN BUERGEY was the ADT Defensive Player of the Game after racking up six tackles and a pass deflection.

San Diego Riptide (6-6) 28, Peoria Pirates (9-3) 21
SAN DIEGO, Calif. â Down 21-0 with eight seconds left in the first half, the San Diego Riptide battled back to score 28 unanswered points and defeat the Peoria Pirates Saturday. JERRY GARRETT, the game's MVP, nabbed the game-winning 41-yard touchdown from KANE CLAUNCH with 7:42 remaining.
Garrett also scored the Riptide's first TD with 8.2 seconds left in the first half. San Diego also scored on its first play of the second half â a 23-yard catch by MARTY GRAHAM â to cut Peoria's lead to 21-14. After the third of four missed field goal attempts by Peoria kicker SCOTT KURZ, San Diego drove to tie the game on a four-yard TD pass on 4th-and-goal from Claunch to RICO CURTIS.
After a scoreless first quarter, a 30-yard touchdown catch by CORNELL CRAIG, a 33-yard scoring grab by LINCOLN DUPREE and a one-yard touchdown run by backup QB RONNIE GORDON gave Peoria its 21-0 first-half lead. QBs WALTER CHURCH and Gordon combined for 230 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception, thrown by Church. Dupree's 93 yards on six catches led the Pirates.
Claunch completed just 8-of-27 passes, but threw four touchdown passes on a 152-yard night. Garrett and Graham both caught three passes for 73 and 38 yards, respectively. Curtis earned Ironman honors with his touchdown catch, 8.5 tackles and a forced fumble. Riptide DS KEVIN BURTON was named the game' s ADT Defensive Player of the Game after tallying 5.0 stops, an interception and breaking up nine passes.
