Wolves Capture 2013-14 Illinois Lottery Cup
April 21, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
The Midwest Division champion Chicago Wolves won more than just a division last weekend. With their 5-3 victory Friday night at Rockford in the final Illinois Lottery Cup game of the season, the Chicago Wolves claimed the Illinois Lottery Cup over the IceHogs.
The Wolves won seven of the 12 games against Rockford this season, which allowed Chicago to wrest possession of the Cup from Rockford. The IceHogs won the lllinois Lottery Cup last season while the Peoria Rivermen hoisted the inaugural Cup in 2011-12.
"The fact that the Illinois Lottery Cup came down to the final game speaks to the level of competition and the magnitude of the rivalry between the two teams," said Wolves president of business operations Mike Gordon. "The third year of the Illinois Lottery Cup has proven to be even more competitive than the first two. Our players and fans continue to embrace it and we look forward to defending the Cup in Year Four."
"The Illinois Lottery Cup is representative of a spirited, intrastate competition between two fine Illinois hockey teams," said Lottery director Michael Jones. "Congratulations to the Chicago Wolves for capturing this year's Cup --- and for setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the American Hockey League season."
The Wolves have reached the postseason for the 16th time in their 20-year history and begin their pursuit of the 2014 Calder Cup championship on Friday night at Rochester. They'll host Game 3 at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, at Allstate Arena. The Wolves will host Games 4 and 5 if necessary.
