WNBA announces first round playoff schedule

NEW YORK (August 8, 2006) - With six of the eight possible teams already securing 2006 WNBA Playoff berths, the schedule for the first round was announced today by the WNBA. The Playoffs will begin on Thursday, August 17.
With six days remaining on the WNBA regular season schedule, Los Angeles has locked up first place in the Western Conference. Sacramento has secured at least a playoff spot, and can clinch the #2 seed with a win tomorrow against the Sparks. Houston, Seattle and Phoenix are battling for the remaining two spots in the West. Seattle and Houston can clinch a playoff berth with a win tonight. Wins by both would eliminate Phoenix from playoff contention.
In the Eastern Conference, playoff teams include Connecticut, Detroit, Indiana and Washington but the order of seeding has yet to be determined. Connecticut, which currently owns the League's best record, can clinch the #1 seed in the East with a win tonight over Chicago coupled with a Seattle victory over Detroit.
