Wizards Top Revs 1-0, Remain Perfect

April 15, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Sporting Kansas City News Release

Kansas City, Mo. - The Kansas City Wizards remained perfect on the season improving to 3-0-0 with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution. Jimmy Conrad made his return for the first place Wizards in high fashion and goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi posted is first clean sheet of the year. For the first time in team history, Kansas City has opened the season with the maximum nine points through the first three games and is now the only team in Major League Soccer who is unbeaten and untied, retaining its first place standing in the Eastern Conference.

If there was any doubt going into the match if Conrad would be ready to play after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia just 15 days ago, it only took him three minutes for him to silence any critics, heading home a Jack Jewsbury corner kick for the win.

The Wizards earned the match's first corner kick when one of Davy Arnaud's shots was deflected out-of-bounds. Jewsbury, who handled the corner kick duties on the night in place of the suspended Jose Luis Burciaga Jr., curled a cross from the lefthand corner past the backpost. Rushing in from the backside, Conrad rose above the defense and hit a beautifully placed header that arced over the commotion in front of the net and came down just inside the top left corner of the frame for what proved to be the game-winning goal. It was the sixth goal of the season by the sixth different player for the Wizards this year. Jewsbury's assist was also the sixth of the season by the sixth different player on the Kansas City roster.

Anchored by Oshoniyi and with the return of the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year in Conrad, Kansas City's defense of Matt Groenwald, Shavar Thomas, Nick Garcia, and Conrad and Oshoniyi, allowed just two shots on goal and six shots overall for its first shutout of the season.
