Detroit Fury News Release

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - The Detroit Fury of the Arena Football League announced that Chuck Winters has been honored with the 2002 Arena Football League Hero Award. The wide receiver/defensive back was recognized for his extensive community involvement that included 67 appearances on behalf of the Detroit Fury, over the past year.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized by the AFL for this award," Winters said. "My mother always taught me to be involved in my community in one way or another. She taught me the importance of being an active member of a community and I feel very fortunate that I am able to work closely with the people and kids of my hometown of Detroit. This is a great award from the AFL and really speaks to what this league and the Detroit Fury are about: getting involved with the community and reaching people one at a time."

Winters, a Detroit DePorres High School and University of Michigan graduate, worked with the local Michigan chapters of the American Diabetes Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the Boy Scouts of America, Variety Children's Charity, the Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program. He was also heavily involved in the Pistons-Palace Foundation, the fund-raising arm of Palace Sports & Entertainment (PS&E), owners of the Detroit Fury.

"Chuck Winters is a pro...plain and simple," said Greg Myford, general manager for the Fury. "We're proud of his efforts in our communities, and the reason he stands out is that Chuck not only calls Detroit home, he acts like it's his home. He cares about what goes on her. Chuck's not just good for the Fury and Arena Football, he's good for sports."

On the field, Winters was a bright spot for the Fury (1-13). In ten games, Winters averaged 11.3 yards per catch and had eight touchdowns. He also returned kicks for the Fury, averaging 21.9 yards per return and returned three for touchdowns. In Week Ten of the season (6/22/02 vs. Chicago) Winters suffered a season-ending ACL injury to his right knee.

Winters received his 2002 AFL Hero Award during a pre-Arena Bowl banquet in San Jose, Calif. The 2003 Arena Football League season begins in February 2003. To learn more about the Detroit Fury or for ticket information, contact the Palace at (248) 377-0100 or log on to www.detroitfury.com.
