Winterhawks Sign Prospect Ryan McCleary
April 8, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks are pleased to announce the signing of Swift Current, SK native Ryan McCleary.
The 6'-0", 160 lb. defenseman was named Team Captain in his rookie season with the Swift Current Legionnaires of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMHL). He registered five goals and 18 assists for 23 points in 44 games.
Winterhawks Alumnus and 1998 Memorial Cup champion, Todd Hornung is an assistant coach for the Legionnaires.
Trent McLeary, Ryan's father, played for the Swift Current Broncos from 1989 to 1993 and later registered 192 National Hockey League games with the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, and Montreal Canadian over an eight-year pro career.
McCleary was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft (107th overall) by the Winterhawks. This draft class has proven fruitful for Head Coach and General Manager, Mike Johnston as McLeary is the second defenseman and seventh player overall to sign a WHL standard player agreement with Portland. Gabe Kalssen (Center - 1st Round), Lochlan Gordon (Goaltender - 3rd Round), Chaz Lucious (Forward - 4th Round), Dawson Pasternak (Forward - 4th Round), Jonah Bevington (Forward - 5th Round), Aidan Litke (Forward - 6th Round), and Brody Tallman (Defense - 8th Round) have all committed to play for the Winterhawks.
McCleary will be eligible to play for the Winterhawks as a 16-year old this coming season.
