Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud Western Hockey League member club, today selected 2004-born Czech goaltender Jan Špunar with the 52nd overall selection in the 2022 CHL Import Draft.
Špunar, 18, ranks third among European goaltenders on NHL Central Scouting's final rankings ahead of next week's 2022 NHL Draft. A native of Olomouc, CZE, Špunar was the third goaltender selected in the 2022 CHL Import Draft.
The 6-foot-3, 185-pound netminder played for HC Olomouc in the Czech under-20 league last season and went 22-8-0 with three shutouts, a 2.57 GAA, and a .911 save percentage. His 22 wins ranked third in the league in 2021-22.
Additionally, Špunar has represented his country at the under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels of international play, and recently won two games with Czechia at the 2022 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.
The Winterhawks only made one selection during Friday's draft as fellow countryman and 2022 NHL Draft eligible defenseman Marek Alscher remains protected by Portland for the 2022-23 season. Spunar is expected to be in Portland in time for training camp.
