Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (49-9-1-2) opened a three-game road trip with a 3-0 win in Kamloops over the Blazers (40-16-2-3) Wednesday.
With 101 points Portland is the first team to reach the century mark this season, and it's the third straight season they've reached that mark. It's the first time the franchise has had three straight 100-point seasons since 1978-79 through 1980-81.
With the shutout, Mac Carruth extended two records, as it was his seventh blanking of the season and 11th of his career. It was the team's 12th shutout of the season, extending another record.
The Hawks scored the lone goal of the first when defenseman Troy Rutkowski scored 8:59 into the game to give Portland a 1-0 lead going into the second period.
Portland extended the lead 1:56 into the second when Brendan Leipsic scored his 42nd goal of the season on a two-on-one to make it 2-0. Later in the period Nic Petan scored his 42nd of the season at the 16:09 mark to pull even with Leipsic in the scoring race and give Portland a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Neither team found the back of the net in the third, as the Hawks finished with the 3-0 win to snap the Blazers' seven-game winning streak.
Carruth stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn the win, while Kamloops netminder Cole Cheveldave allowed three goals on 24 shots.
The Hawks are back in action with back-to-back games in Prince George against the Cougars.
