Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Winston-Salem Dash were able to cool down the 'Clones on Tuesday evening, opening the series with a 4-2 win over Brooklyn. The Cyclones went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position and struck out a dozen times while the Dash used a pair of home runs to propel them to the series-opening win.
Luis Moreno (1-5) made the start for Brooklyn and quickly found himself in trouble. Duke Ellis led off the game for Winston-Salem with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. On a 2-1 offering to Bryan Ramos, Ellis stole third and a throwing error from catcher Jose Mena allowed him to score the game's first run.
Brooklyn got even in the bottom of the fourth when Nic Gaddis and Jose Peroza worked back-to-back walks. Jose Mena followed with a double off the wall in left-center field that allowed Gaddis to score, but Peroza was thrown out at the plate the keep it tied at 1-1.
Moreno settled down after some first-inning trouble, and pitched into the sixth inning but the Dash grabbed control of the game. On the first pitch of the top of the sixth Ben Norman belted a home run over the right field wall to give Winston-Salem a 2-1 edge. Two pitches later, Tyler Osik connected on his seventh home run of the season for back-to-back homers that extended the lead to 3-1.
The lead would grow to 4-1 in the top of the eighth when Alsander Womack had a sac fly to cap the scoring for Winston-Salem.
Brooklyn threatened in the bottom of the ninth after Shervyen Newton had a one-out double and Matt Rudick walked to put a pair of runners aboard. After Rowdey Jordan struck out for the second out of the frame, Stanley Consuegra laced a single into right field to score Newton and trim the deficit to 4-2 with Alex Ramirez coming to the plate. But the 19-year-old phenom, who came into the game with 18 RBI in his last 10 games, struck out with the tying runs aboard to end the game and close out Winston-Salem's 4-2 win.
