Mississippi Braves News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL - After outscoring the Barons 25-8 the past three days, Birmingham (22-28, 53=66) exacted revenge on Saturday night with a 5-0 shutout of Mississippi at Regions Field.

The M-Braves (26-23, 55-63) were held to just four hits and were blanked for just the eighth time this season. Mississippi will have a chance to win the series once again on Sunday, leading 3-2 after the first five contests.

Starter Nolan Kingham (L, 1-1) suffered his first loss since rejoining the Brave last week. The Las Vegas native gave up four runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. Birmingham hurlers Norge Vera, Emilio Vargas (W, 3-5), Yoelvin Silven, and Caleb Freeman combined for the shutout.

The Braves left nine runners on bases and couldn't take advantage of five walks from Birmingham pitching. Javier Valdes was 2-for-4 on Saturday, while Landon Stephens reached base safely three times, finishing 1-for-2 with two walks. Jordan Cowan was 1-for-4 with a double.

The Barons were led by Oscar Colas and Wes Kath. Colas hit a first-inning homer and was 2-for-4, while Kath was 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the second inning.

At the night's end, Mississippi trails first place Montgomery by 4.5 games with 19 left to play in the 2022 regular season.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Regions Field. RHP Roddery Munoz (0-0, 10.80) makes the start for Mississippi against RHP Matthew Thompson (0-1, 6.59) for Birmingham. The first pitch is at 4:00 pm CT, with coverage starting at 3:45 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv.

The M-Braves return to Trustmark Park on Tuesday for the penultimate homestand of the season against the Tennessee Smokies. The series stretches from August 30-Sept. 4 and includes back-to-back fireworks shows on Sept. 3-4. For tickets and more information, fans can visit mississippibraves.com or call 888-BRAVES4.
