Wings Select Thomson In First Round Of NLL Entry Draft

Denver, CO- The Philadelphia Wings selected forward Merrick Thomson as their first pick (second overall) in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft. Thomson was the career scoring leader at the University of Albany with 188 goals and 56 assists for 244 points. He helped lead Albany to the NCAA quarterfinal round for the first time in the program's history, and a school-record 15-3 mark.

The Wings traded their third round pick (32nd overall) and a conditional third round pick in the 2008 Entry Draft to reacquire ten-year veteran Jake Bergey from Boston. Bergey was selected by Boston in last month's Expansion Draft.

"Merrick is a big, strong, left-handed forward ," said Wings General Manager Lindsay Sanderson. "He's a great finisher and will be a great asset to our offense."

Merrick Thomson (First Round, Second Overall): Forward ... Stony Creek, ON ... 6'12", 210-pounds ... Shoots left ... Voted all-conference four times, including a pair of first-team selections, during his career. He netted 56 goals and ranks third among the nation's leaders at 3.11 per game. Thomson was named the America East Championship's most outstanding player after accounting for 10 goals and two assists in the post-season tournament.

The Wings have five picks remaining in this evenings' draft including two in the fourth round (45 and 46 overall), the fifth round (60 overall), and two in the sixth round (74 and 77 overall). A complete listing will be available on wingslax.com upon the conclusion of tonight's draft.
