Arizona Sting take five in 2007 NLL Draft

GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- The Arizona Sting selected five players in the 2007 NLL Entry Draft today, which was held at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

With the team's first pick, Sting General Manager and Head Coach Bob Hamley took Bryan Safarik (42nd overall, 3rd round), a two-time NCAA Division II All-America selection at Wingate University. He finished his collegiate career as Wingate's second all-time leading goal scorer with 118 goals. The Vancouver, British Columbia native also played for the Burnaby Lakers of the Western Lacrosse Association for the last two summers. In 35 career games with the Lakers, Safarik has recorded five goals and 11 assists.

Arizona selected forward Jamie Pillon (53rd overall, 4th round) with its second pick. Pillon ranked fourth in scoring for Brampton of the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. A series in 2007 with 13 goals and 22 assists.

The Sting took defenseman Allan Downey three picks later. The Waterloo, Ontario native led Mercyhurst College to the 2007 NCAA D-II National Championship game while serving as team captain. He also recorded three goals and five assists in 2007 as a member of the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks of the OLA.

With its next pick, Arizona took Scott Janssen (69th overall, 5th round), a forward from Mercyhurst College. He was named to the 2007 East Coast Conference Second Team after notching 30 goals and 11 assists. A native of New Westminster, British Columbia, Janssen scored 34 points (12G, 22A) in 12 games for Burnaby of the WLA in 2007.

The Sting took forward David Gerbarg with their final pick (81st overall, 6th round), a forward from Whittier College and a native of Paradise Valley, Arizona.
