Wings Recall Nyquist

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Thursday recalled right wing Gustav Nyquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nyquist, 24, leads the Griffins in scoring and is tied for fourth in the AHL with 21 points (7-14 - 21) in 15 games. Originally Detroit's third choice (121st overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Nyquist split his 2012-13 season between Detroit and Grand Rapids before helping the Griffins to their first-ever Calder Cup championship.

A native of Halmstad, Sweden, Nyquist has appeared in 137 games with Grand Rapids since 2011, notching 143 points (53-90 - 143) and 60 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward has also skated in 40 career regular season games with Detroit, posting 13 points (4-9 - 13), and 18 Stanley Cup Playoff games, tallying five points (2-3 - 5).

The Wings will battle the Carolina Hurricanes at Joe Louis Arena tonight at 7:30 p.m., when Nyquist is expected to make his season debut.

The Griffins (11-4-1-1) are on the road this weekend, battling the Iowa Wild tomorrow at 8:05 p.m. EST and the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at 8 p.m. EST., before returning to Van Andel Arena for a seven-game home stand.
