HARLINGEN - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings manager Eddie Dennis has announced the signing of former big league pitcher Pedro Borbon as the Wings' new pitching coach.
Borbon, 38, pitched for a number of Major League Baseball organizations from 1992 to 2003. The last major league team he pitched for was the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003. Last year, he pitched in the minor leagues in Class AA and AAA ball, along with a stop in an independent league. Borbon is a native of the Dominican Republic.
The WhiteWings have signed two new players, first baseman Luis Blanco and outfielder Sergio Cairo. Cairo, 35, has 13 years of professional baseball experience. The native of the Dominican Republic batted .319 in 2002 with the San Angelo Colts of the Central Baseball League. He had four home runs and 30 RBIs in 141 at-bats. Cairo has spent the past three seasons in the Dominican independent leagues.
Blanco, 26, played in the Montreal Expos organization in 2004 and the Mexican League in 2005. Most recently, he played in the Venezuelan Winter League in 2005. Playing for Caracas, Blanco batted .291 and led the league with 13 home runs. He also had 42 RBIs in 165 at-bats. Blanco is a native of Caracas, Venezuela. He has played professional ball for six years.
To make room for the new players, the WhiteWings have released outfielder Jordan Szabo and infielder Scott Jay. In 24 games, Szabo batted .205 with no home runs and seven RBIs. In 16 games, Jay batted .228 with one home run and nine RBIs.
Rio Grande Valley currently has 21 players on the active roster, one under the limit for United League Baseball teams. Additional roster moves are expected in the next few days. The WhiteWings will leave Harlingen tonight to embark on a 12-game road trip. RGV plays at Amarillo Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.
