Wings lose to Dorados

(Bossier City, LA) - The Rio Grande Valley Dorados used their opportunistic, big-play defense to avenge their only loss of the 2007 af2 season, defeating the Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings 42-39. The Dorados overcame the first-quarter ejections of three key players and three Josh Kellett interceptions to improve to 13-1, making them one of two once-defeated teams in the league.

In the first quarter RGV OL/DL Nate Bell was ejected from the ball game for fighting. Later, following a Chris Canty 38-yard fumble return for a touchdown, Three more players were removed from the ball game by the officials. Canty and Quinton Staton were thrown out for fighting, as was BattleWings center Kert Turner.

Bossier-Shreveport opened the scoring when Brian Hazelwood kicked a 21-yard field goal on the Wing's first possession. It was their only lead of the game. The Dorados responded with a 34-yard scoring pass from Josh Kellett to George Williams to take a 7-3 lead. It was the first of three touchdown catches for Williams. On Bossier-Shreveport's next possession, Canty high-stepped down the left sideline with his fumble recovery. His preening raised the ire of the BattleWings and the fighting which led to the ejections ensued. After the teams traded touchdowns, RGV"s Andre Goines intercepted a Quincy Carter pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown to give the Dorados a 28-10 lead. That was the first of three interceptions thrown by Carter.. Goines earned defensive player of the game honors. The BattleWings closed the gap to 28-17 when Carter connected with Jamaal Perry for a 7-yard scoring pass with 2:33 remaining in the half. Phillip Geiggar intercepted Kellett in the Dorados' final possession of the first half, and at the break the score remained 28-17.

The Dorados attempted to convert four 4th down chances in the second half. On two of those, Kellet found Williams for touchdowns.

With 5:44 seconds remaining in the game, Carter hit Manwell Talbert for a 45-yard touchdown bomb. A successful two-point conversion trimmed the Dorados lead to three points, 35-32. The second of those dramatic fourth-down Dorados scores made the ultimate difference in the game. The final Kellett touchdown toss of the night covered 23 yards to Williams to make it 42-32.

The Battlewings scored on 4th and goal when Carter found Perry in the end zone with 23 seconds showing on the clock. When an on-sides kick attempt by Bossier-Shreveport was unsuccessful, the Dorados ran one play to end the game.

Carter finished 19 of 38 with three interceptions, 222 yards and five touchdown passes. Kellet , who was named offensive player of the game, was 26 of 44 with four scoring passes and 3 interceptions, two of them by Chris Ibezim. Coco Blalock, playing defensive back in place of the ejected Chris Canty, was named iron man of the game. He also caught six passes for 42 yards.

Jamaal Perry lead the BattleWings offensively, catching eight passes for 67 yards and three touchdowns.

The BattleWings, who have clinched a playoff spot for the first time in franchise history, fall to 10-4. Next week, they will play the af2's other 13-1 team, the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Pioneers. They will close out the regular season in Laredo.
