Philadelphia Wings News Release
BUFFALO, NY - The Philadelphia Wings were defeated by the Buffalo Bandits 13-12 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. The Bandits secured the win with a goal in the closing second of the game (:07) to give the Wings their second straight loss. Philadelphia had 30 minutes of penalties during the game versus Buffalo's 18. The Wings face the Rochester Knighthawks in their next game on Saturday, March 3 at the Wachovia Center at 7:30 p.m.
"The loss was pretty devastating," said Wings' General Manager and Head Coach Lindsay Sanderson. "We got off to a slow start and had several undisciplined penalties. Despite a pretty decent penalty kill, we just couldn't get the job done. "
Buffalo got an early start when Pat McCready scored just :20 into the game. Philadelphia got their first of the night 2:00 into the first when defenseman Kyle Sweeney scored on a breakaway. The Bandits' Cory Bomberry put the Buffalo in the lead again with a power play goal followed by another goal by teammate Delby Powless. The Wings' Keith Cromwell posted Philadelphia's second goal of the night. Bomberry scored his second of the night with just :44 left in the quarter to give Buffalo a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
The Wings surged back in the second quarter with four straight goals (Jeff Ratcliffe, Dan Marohl, Sean Greenhalgh - 2) to take a 6-4 lead over Buffalo. The Bandits' John Tavares scored his first goal of the night with 1:49 left in the second, but the Philadelphia still had a 6-5 lead at the half.
Despite playing shorthanded for over six minutes in the third quarter, the Wings still managed to hold their lead. Buffalo's Tavares and Philadelphia's Marohl each scored their second of the night, then the Bandits' Roger Vyse and the Wings' Athan Iannucci each scored. After three, the Wings held a 9-8 lead.
The Wings came out strong in the fourth with two early goals by rookies Ian Llord and Kyle Wailes. Bomberry scored his second of the night, a power play goal followed by his second power play goal to pull the Bandits within one. Buffalo tied the game on a Tavares goal scored right after the Bandits' 12th power play of the night expired. The Wings took the lead again when Iannucci scored his second of the night on a power play goal at 12:22. Buffalo tied the game at 12 each with an extra attacker and Tavares' third goal of the night.
