Rockford, Ill.- The Rockford IceHogs dropped a 6-1 contest to the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night at the Rockford MetroCentre in front of 4,867 fans. Kalamazoo goalie Ryan Nie stymied the Hogs for most of the night making 25 saves and the Wings used a balanced scoring attack to knock off Rockford with six different goal scorers.
It took the Wings just 1:25 to grab a 1-0 lead as winger Nick Bootland set up center Kory Karlander on the power play for his 15th goal of the season. Later in the opening period with Rockford on the power play, Bootland picked off a pass and beat Hogs goalie Jake Moreland while short-handed at 11:34 for the 2-0 lead.
The only marker in the second period came at the 7:39 mark when winger Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn extended the Wings advantage to 3-0, knocking in a Karlander feed past Moreland. Kalamazoo put the game out of reach in the third period with three goals in the latter stages.
Winger Andrew Leach deflected in his fifth tally of the campaign at 13:59 before Alexander Valentine banked in his first goal of season at 14:35 for a 5-0 lead. Winger Justin Cross completed the Kalamazoo barrage at 17:36, firing home his 19th goal of the season. Rockford winger Jesse Bennefield ruined Nie's perfect night at 18:27, snapping in his 11th goal of the year.
Rockford went scoreless on the power play for the second straight night, going 0-for-6 while the Wings went 1-for-3.
