Wichita Wingnuts News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (3-1) defeated the Kansas City T-Bones (1-3) 3-2 in a rain-shortened affair on Sunday evening at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.
The game was called after six complete innings due to a heavy thunderstorm that swept through the area.
With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Cole Armstrong hit a ground-rule double down the right field line. After Abel Nieves fouled out, Derek Perren singled on a line drive to right that scored Armstrong with the game's first run. Armstrong used a head-first slide to evade Matt Padgett's relay throw to home plate.
The T-Bones briefly tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run to left from Jairo Perez, but the Wingnuts re-gained the lead in the top of the sixth when Armstrong hit an opposite field, two-run shot to left-center.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kansas City made a bid to tie the game before the tarp was put on the field. Brandon Jones drew a one-out walk and scored on Ray Sadler's groundball double into the left field corner. Padgett then walked to put runners on first and second with the Wingnuts still ahead 3-2. Jake Kahaulelio saved the lead when he robbed Felix Molina on a groundball in the hole at second. Kahaulelio made a sliding stop to his left and made a spinning throw to Ryan Khoury to force out Padgett. Khoury's relay to first nabbed Molina to complete the inning-ending--and ultimately game-ending--double play.
The game was delayed heading into the top of the seventh and officially called at 7:45 p.m.
Junior Guerra started for the Wingnuts and earned credit for a complete game win. Guerra allowed two earned runs on four hits in six innings. Guerra walked two and struck out six.
Brian Murphy took a complete game loss for Kansas City, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six frames. Murphy walked two and struck out five.
The Wingnuts head to Gary, IN for a three-game series against the Gary SouthShore RailCats beginning Monday night at 7:10 p.m. Left-hander Kristhiam Linares makes his Wingnuts' debut and faces RailCats' lefty Alain Quijano.
