WINGNUTS HANDCUFFED BY MINCEY IN OPENER
Cleburne 2, Wichita 1
W: Patrick Mincey (9-8) L: Tim Brown (3-5) S: Winston Abreu (23)
WICHITA, Kans. - Patrick Mincey allowed just one run over eight innings, and the Wichita Wingnuts late rally fell short as the Cleburne Railroaders squeezed out a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Mincey (9-8) and Wingnuts starter Tim Brown (3-5) were excellent all night, trading zeroes into the sixth, when Cleburne (44-50) broke into the run column on an RBI single from Geraldo Valentin. Pichi Balet added an RBI single of his own in the eighth, extending the Railroaders lead to 2-0.
The Wingnuts (55-38) couldn't get on track against Mincey until the eighth, when Brennen Salgado smacked a solo homer to cut the deficit in half. The Cleburne right-hander closed out the frame without any additional damage, allowing just five hits while striking out six over his eight innings.
Josh Goossen-Brown got the final out of the eighth and then rolled through the Railroaders 1-2-3 in the ninth, giving the offense a chance against Cleburne closer Winston Abreu. After a pair of walks and a wild pitch, the Wingnuts had runners at the corners with nobody out. Abreu then induced three flyouts in a row, sealing his league-leading 23rd save.
Brent Clevlen finished 3-3 with two doubles and a walk, giving him four two-baggers in his last three games and 31 on the season.
The Wingnuts and Railroaders continue their series tomorrow night at 7:05, with righties Alex Boshers (10-4, 3.92) and Laetten Galbraith (3-1, 2.90) getting the start. All the action will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at americanassociationbaseball.tv.
