Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA CRUISES PAST TEXAS
The Wichita Wingnuts scored five in the first inning and never looked back, cruising to a 7-1 victory over the Texas AirHogs Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. After Tyler Kane set down Texas in order in the top of the first, the Wichita offense went to work in the home half. Three of the first four Wingnuts picked up hits, with T.J. Mittelstaedt collecting an RBI double to open the scoring. Matt Chavez followed with a sacrifice fly for his 50th RBI of the season, and Martin Medina added an RBI single to make it 3-0. In his first at-bat since coming off of the disabled list earlier in the day, Harrison Kain then launched a two-run homer to cap the five-run frame. Texas pulled one back in the third, scoring an unearned run on a Cory Morales sacrifice fly. Wichita answered with the final two runs of the night in the bottom half, as Zack Cox drove in a pair with a double. The pitching staffs took it from there on both sides, as the two clubs combined to put nine men on base over the final six innings of the game. The win is Wichita's third in a row, and ninth in 12 meetings with the AirHogs so far this season.
KANE'S DEBUT LEADS STAFF
After signing earlier in the day on Friday, right-hander Tyler Kane pitched very well in his Wingnuts debut, allowing just one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts over five innings to earn the victory over Texas. Behind the new righty, Wichita's bullpen was dominant, as the trio of Mike Devine, Luis Pardo, and Gage Smith combined to toss four scoreless innings. The trio allowed just a pair of singles in their four innings, and all four of the pitchers last night for Wichita did not yield a single walk to the AirHogs.
A BALANCED ATTACK
After losing a season-high four straight earlier in the week, the Wingnuts won their third in a row Friday night, and early on were led by an offense that had 12 hits. As was the case in St. Paul, the Wingnuts got production from up and down their order, as eight of the nine collected at least one hit. Zack Cox led the way with three hits for Wichita, and also drove in a pair of runs. Joining Cox with multiple hits were Martin Medina and Christian Stringer, who leads the Wingnuts with 33 multi-hit efforts this year.
