Wichita Wingnuts News Release
POMONA, NY- The Wichita Wingnuts (53-25) won their eighth consecutive game on Thursday night, beating the Can-Am League's Rockland Boulders (38-37) 9-6 at Provident Bank Park.
Wichita set three franchise home runs records in the game. C.J. Ziegler cracked his 22nd of the year in the top of the fourth to set a single-season mark. Wichita belted six home runs as a team, which is a new franchise-best for a single game. The six home runs also gave the Wingnuts 88 for the season, passing their team single-season mark of 86 set in 2009.
For a second straight night, John Rodriguez helped the Wingnuts get off to a quick start. With Jake Kahaulelio on the first base with one out in the opening inning, Rodriguez clocked a two-run homer to deep right field that gave Wichita a 2-0 lead.
Cole Armstrong led off the top of the second with a home run. Armstrong hooked a line drive just fair inside the right field foul pole to make it 3-0.
In the top of the third, Ryan Khoury drew a two-out, bases loaded walk to force in the Wingnuts' fourth run.
Rockland scratched out a run in the bottom of the third to cut the Wingnuts' lead to 4-1. Donnie Webb led off with a double to right-center and went to third on a bunt single from Danny Bomback. Jerod Edmondson drove in Webb on a fielder's choice groundball to first base.
Ziegler's fourth-inning home run came with one out on a high line drive to left-center. Kelly Hunt and Greg Porter tied for the previous team record with 21 home runs in 2009.
Rockland scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to pull within one run. With two outs and no one on base, Jaren Matthews doubled to left-center. After Scott Knazek walked, Matt Nandin, Webb, and Bomback hit consecutive RBI singles. Wingnuts' starter Justin Klipp then retired Edmondson on a groundball to first to end the inning and keep the Wingnuts in front.
In the top of the sixth, Rodriguez drew a one-out walk. Two batters later, Brent Clevlen smacked an opposite field home run to right-center that made it 7-4.
Clevlen and Abel Nieves hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning to stretch the lead to 9-4.
Klipp earned the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. Klipp walked two and struck out four. It marked the first time in 11 starts this season that Klipp has walked more than one batter.
Charlie Law started and took the loss for Rockland. Law allowed five earned runs on five hits in four innings. Law walked eight and struck out none.
Nick Walters and Andrew Aizenstadt each worked a scoreless relief inning for Wichita.
Rockland's final two runs came on back-to-back two-out, RBI hits from Edmondson and Angel Molina in the bottom of the ninth inning.
