Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lake Elsinore, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm rallied from an early 3-0 deficit, then held off the Quakes to salvage the final game of the three-game series, defeating Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday evening by a final of 8-7 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore.

A six-run third erased a 3-0 Quakes' lead, putting the Storm in front to stay. The Quakes scored the game's final four runs, but left men on base over the final three innings, as their three-game winning streak came to an end.

Rancho built an early lead against Storm starter Mark Pope, as Chris Jacobs and Charlie Mirabal each drove in a run in the second, putting the Quakes up 2-0. The Quakes capitalized on one of four Storm errors in the third, as Joc Pederson came home on a throwing error to make it 3-0.

That all changed in the bottom of the third though, as Ryan Acosta, making his first start of the year, began to struggle. After facing the minimum over the first two innings of work, Acosta allowed an RBI single by Chris O'Dowd and a game-tying double to Michael Wing, as the Storm evened the game at 3-3. Acosta (1-1) would depart in favor of Eammon Portice, who retired the first batter he faced, but allowed the next four hitters to reach safely. Casey McElroy singled home Wing to put the Storm in front for good at 4-3. Luis Domoromo followed with a two-run single, making it 6-3.

Portice allowed two more runs in the fifth, as Lake Elsinore took a commanding lead at 8-3.

After Pope (7-7) finished the fifth, Rancho took advantage of more bad defense over the next two innings. Steve Domecus singled and scored on an error in the sixth, before a two-out seventh inning error opened the door for three more unearned runs against Storm lefty Mark Hardy. Angelo Songco ripped a two-run shot to right field to make it 8-6, his fourth homer of the year and second in as many games. Domecus and Jacobs followed with back-to-back doubles to close to within a run, but the Quakes couldn't get any closer, stranding three men over the final three innings.

Storm closer Kevin Quackenbush surrendered a lead-off single to Bobby Coyle in the ninth, but retired the next three hitters to earn his league-best 22nd save.

Still three games back in the Wild card, the Quakes (18-25, 55-58) take a day off on Monday, then return to action on Tuesday to open a three-game set at Modesto. Garrett Gould (4-7) takes on Modesto's Kennil Gomez (2-3) in Tuesday's series-opener at 7:05pm.

The Quakes return to The Epicenter on Friday, August 10th, opening a three-game home stand against the Storm. Friday will be another Family RV $1 Family Feast Night, as all hot dogs, Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches will be just $1 throughout the night. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
