NAHL Topeka Pilots

Win Streak Snapped at Six as 'Runners Fall

January 21, 2012 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Topeka Pilots News Release

The Topeka RoadRunners had put together an impressive season high six game win streak and were heading home for a cozy six game homestand but ran into trouble on Friday night, losing a tough 2-1 decision in regulation to the second place Texas Tornado.

In a scoreless first period, Topeka had a lot of energy and generated numerous chances. When the chances didn't equal goals, there was no panic as it seemed the chances would keep coming. Topeka outshot Texas 8-6 in the first and despite being unable to score, showed no signs of distress.

In the second period, a pair of Texas power play goals proved to be the 'Runners undoing. The first one, a deflected shot from the left point by Lucas Whelan that found a top corner at 6:01 giving the Tornado a 1-0 lead. The lead grew to 2-0 when Jack Prince jammed home a power play goal at 8:36. Topeka cut the lead in half at 13:49 on a nice goal by Richard Young assisted by newcomer Anders Schultz and defenseman Blake Box.

The third period was also scoreless, but it wasn't without chances for the 'Runners to tie it up. In the end, Texas held on and played a smart, disciplined road hockey game and extended their lead over third place Topeka to 4 points in the NAHL South.

Topeka (25-12-2) and Texas (25-10-6) meet again Saturday night at 7:05 in Landon Arena.
