FARGO, N.D. - Joe Sergent picked up his 13th victory of the season to lead the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks to their tenth straight victory, an 8-3 win over the Calgary Vipers on Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. Fargo-Moorhead improved to 35-5 in the second half and 63-25 overall with the victory. Calgary dropped to 20-21 in the second half and 45-43 overall.
Sergent (13-2) pitched 6.0 shutout innings, allowing six hits. He struck out a career-high ten batters and walked one. Sergent's 13th victory tied him with teammate Brandon Culp, who broke Jeff Bittiger's team record last night with his 13th win of the season. Calgary starter Quintin Oldenburg (10-5) took the loss. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. Oldenburg struck out four batters and walked two.
The RedHawks tallied runs in each of the first four innings to take an 8-0 lead. Richard Austin started the onslaught with an RBI single in the first inning. In the second inning, Clyde Williams and Bryon Jeffcoat notched RBI doubles to push the âHawks to a 3-0 lead. Ruben Salazar drilled his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to dead center, in the third inning and added a two-run single in the fourth to wrap up the Fargo-Moorhead scoring.
Juan Thomas drilled a two-run double for the Vipers in the eighth inning to make the score 8-2. Shaun Ashman added an RBI groundout in the ninth inning for the final run for Calgary.
The RedHawks and Vipers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. Game time is 2:05 p.m., with Mike Peschel (6-4) getting the start for the RedHawks. Calgary will counter with Dan Reichert (2-1).
