OMAHA â The Fresno Grizzlies clawed Royals starter Kris Wilson for seven runs in the fourth inning and went on to hand Omaha as a team, as well as Wilson individually, a fourth consecutive defeat. 9-4 was the final score of Saturday night's series opener, which was witnessed by an enthusiastic crowd of 8,131 on a pleasant evening at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The contest was scoreless until the fourth, when Fresno sent 12 batters to the plate. Todd Linden hit a three-run homer deep over the right field wall to draw first blood. It was Linden's third home run of the season and was the 13th gopher ball served up by Wilson (2-5), which ranks second in the league. Trey Lunsford, Jason Ellison and Brian Dallimore added run-scoring singles and former University of Nebraska product Adam Shabala had a fielder's choice RBI.
Over his last four starts, Wilson has posted an 11.84 ERA, allowing 37 hits including eight round-trippers in 19 innings.
The Royals, meanwhile, were blanked by Fresno starter Chris Begg (1-2) over the first five innings, extending their streak without scoring to 18 frames. Omaha finally broke that drought in the sixth, as Rick Short's two-run double chased Begg and closed the deficit to 7-2.
Grizzlies second baseman Cody Ransom banged out three hits, including a solo shot in the seventh off Brad Voyles to make it 8-2. The Royals chipped away at the margin with two runs in their half of the seventh on sacrifice flies by Jarrod Patterson and Byron Gettis. However, that was as close as the Royals would come, as Omaha (15-21) falls to 1-4 on the home stand and 7-14 this season at Rosenblatt Stadium.
The Royals hope to have better luck Sunday at Haymarket Park in Lincoln, where they entertain Fresno at 2:05 p.m.: Grizzlies LH Noah Lowry (2-2, 4.40) vs. Royals RH Jamey Wright (5-2, 2.66). Gates open at 1:00 p.m. and the 1st 1,000 fans receive a free poster of former Husker and O-Royals player and current Kansas City Royals first baseman Ken Harvey. The pre-game shows airs at 1:45 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com
