Wilmington Sea Dawgs News Release

It was a grand opening of sorts. The Sea Dawgs kicked off their 2010 home campaign in style with a 97-93 victory over the Savannah Wildcats. This is the third year in a row the Dawgs have won their home opener at the friendly confines of the Schwartz Center. After holding a 19 point lead at two separate occasions, the Wildcats cut the Sea Dawg lead to two points, 89-87 with just under three minutes remaining. Zach Herrmann and Aaron Scott helped close the game out scoring 6 of the last 8 points for Wilmington. Herrmann's near triple double of 8 points, 8 assists, and 9 rebounds helped paced the Dawgs from his all important point guard position.

"It's my job to be the floor leader on the court. To make sure guys are in the right spot, to get them the ball, and to make sure they play hard. I don't look for my shot until they've all gotten theirs," said Herrmann.

With the current injury situation at the forwards position, it is important that the guards play well and shoulder more of the leadership and scoring roles. Returning guard Jim Jones had his second big game of the season leading all scorers with 23 points, while chipping in 7 assists and 5 rebounds. Jones scoring played a huge role early in the game after the Dawgs had a sluggish start.

"I just wanted to play hard and take high percentage shots. We started off a little slow, I was lucky to get a few shots to go in and help us get going," Jones stated.

The Sea Dawgs found themselves in a 16-26 hole after the first quarter, but it was Jones 8 early points that helped keep them close. Wilmington rebounded in the second scoring 38 points in the quarter to give the Dawgs a 54-45 halftime lead.

Coach Kuhl was not happy with his teams first quarter play. During the break between quarters, Kuhl was vocal about what he wanted his team to do.

"I just told them to play basketball. We came out and were just one pass and shoot. I told them to get the ball inside too and to play better defense." said Kuhl.

The Dawgs responded as they erased their early deficit and never gave the lead back for the rest of the game.

Donielle Davis had another solid game from the guard/forward position scoring 17 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. Former UNCW guard Aaron Scott also added 14 points.

This win makes Wilmington 3-1 on the season while Savannah slips to 1-2. The Sea Dawgs will tip it up again on Saturday at 7:05 at the Schwartz Center on the campus of Cape Fear Community College against the Birmingham Steel.
