Wilmington Heads to NY to Take on NY Red Bulls II
June 24, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Red Bull Arena will host the match between the Wilmington Hammerheads and New York Red Bulls II this Sunday at 3:00pm.
The NY Red Bulls II currently sit second in the standings, with an 8-1-4 record. Just halfway through the season, Wilmington has had a successful run; and after several long weeks on the road, the Hammerheads sit with a 4-4-5 record, putting them in ninth place.
Last week, both Wilmington and NY tied their opponents, Bethlehem and Orlando City B. Wilmington's tie kept them and Bethlehem in ninth and tenth place with a matching 4-4-5 record.
Hammerheads to Watch
#47 Ashani Fairclough, defender, was named Man of the Match and made the USL's Team of the Week for scoring the equalizer in the match against Bethlehem. Fairclough plays strong in the center of the defensive lineup, alongside leading scorer, #23 Bruno Perone.
Midfielder #7 Austin Martz has proven to be a Player to Watch for the past several games. During the fourth round in the Open Cup against Real Salt Lake Tuesday, Martz played all 120 minutes, with five impressive shots on goal.
As the Hammerheads' offensive lineup further develops, #22 Kyle Parker continues to be one of the strongest strikers. He was previously named USL's Player of the Week for scoring twice against Harrisburg, including a stoppage time game-winner, as the Hammerheads defeated Harrisburg 3-2 at Legion Stadium, June 3rd.
Head coach Mark Briggs stated, "The focus for us has been doing a lot of finishing lately, a lot of repetition in front of goal. Since we played NY last, we've changed the formation a bit. It was disappointing to lose 1-0 in our last meeting and we hope to change the outcome Sunday."
With 17 more games left this season, the Hammerheads will continue to fight for a playoff position, needing to earn, and maintain, just one more point.
