Rhinos to Battle Pittsburgh

June 24, 2016 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rochester Rhinos News Release

Rochester, NY - The Rhinos face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a rematch of their season opener. Rochester is looking to restart their home streak after a tough loss to first place Louisville City FC last Saturday. The 1-0 defeat reset the Rhinos 24 game home streak, they had not lost at Rochester Rhinos Stadium since August of 2014.

The Rhinos will be focusing on bringing home a win this weekend, after a tough few weeks in the USL season. Dropping two straight against Toronto FC II, and then Louisville City FC, has caused a drop in the standings among the Eastern Conference for the defending champs, although they do remain in the top eight.

The match will be streamed on the USL Match Center.

Motivated to earn three points at home, the Rhinos look to regain their reputation as a defensive power house against the thirteenth place Riverhounds. In their meeting earlier this season, the Rhinos opened up their 2016 season with a 1-0 victory with a goal from the team's leading goal scorer Christian Volesky.

The Rochester Rhinos fell to 5-4-3 last week, while the Pittsburgh Riverhounds picked up their second win of the season against FC Montrea advancing to 2-7-3. The Rhinos are 2-0 against Montreal this season, with Volesky scoring six goals in just eight games against their northern rivals.

Offensively the Rhinos have three key players contributing consistently each game. While Volesky leads in goals scored (5), followed by Joe Farrell (3), the true leader is forward Steevan Dos Santos. The Cape Verde veteran has a team high twenty-seven shots this season, and another team high thirteen shots on goal. With those numbers we should see more success from Dos Santos in the upcoming games finding the back of the net.

The previous match between the teams saw 21 shots, four of those coming from Pittsburgh's Corey Hertzog who has four goals on the season and is the team's runner up for leading goal scorer. Hertzog is trailing leader Romeo Parkes by just one. Both will be men to watch in tomorrow's match.
