Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

ABILENE, TX -- The Prairie Dogs have not had much success against the San Angelo Colts this season. Tuesday night was no different as San Angelo downed Abilene 8-4 in the 33rd and final meeting of the 2012 season series.

Logan Williamson made his eighth start of the year against Abilene and fired eight innings to pick up his ninth win of the season. After Geraldo Valentin doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the second, the lefty retired 12 of the next 15 batters he faced to send the game into the sixth inning with his team leading 5-1.

Attempting to recover from his worst outing of the season six days ago, Woods Fines gave up double to J.J. Sherrill on the game's first pitch. Three batters later, Cory Patton picked up the R.B.I. with a fielder's choice groundout.

Sherrill was at it again in the top of the third when he started the inning with an infield single. A walk and a single later, Patton again plated Sherrill, this time with a single up the middle to give the Colts a 2-1 advantage. Salvador Paniagua followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Daryl Jones and widening the lead to 3-1.

Sherrill, who entered the night trailing only Fort Worth's Chad Gabriel with a .359 batting average, went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and a double.

Fines got the first two outs of the fourth on just two pitches before Sherrill again roped a single to right field. Jason Diaz followed with a walk before Daryl Jones knocked them both in with a double to left-center field. Jones also collected four hits, going 4-for-5 with a run scored and that two-run double.

The Dogs struggled to find offense until Eddie Browne led off the bottom of the sixth with an infield single but was caught stealing for the first out of the inning. Joe Weik and Kyle Nichols followed with consecutive singles before Geraldo Valentin cut into the deficit with an R.B.I knock through the middle, cutting the lead to 6-2. After Landon Camp's error at third base led to another sixth inning tally, Zach Welch drew the Dogs to within a pair with a run-scoring single to right field.

The Colts, however, continued their support of ace left-hander Logan Williamson. San Angelo snatched a run in the seventh and another in the eighth to climb back in front by four, 8-4.

Jason Veyna made his Prairie Dogs debut and committed three errors at second base. The right-handed batter from the Pecos League also went 1-for-4 at the dish.

Jason Martin watched his 12-game hit streak come to an end as the center fielder went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The Colts dominated the season series, winning 22 of the 33 games contested and five of the nine games played at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene.

The Prairie Dogs will take tomorrow off before welcoming the Fort Worth Cats to town for the final pair of home games in 2012. Thursday is Abilene Chamber of Commerce Night at the ballpark while Friday is Fan Appreciation night presented by KTAB and KRBC. If you cannot make it to the park, you can hear each Prairie Dogs game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
