Massachusetts Pirates defensive back Chucky Williams

The Massachusetts Pirates have re-signed defensive back Chucky Williams for the upcoming season. Last season in 13 games Williams was sixth in the National Arena League averaging four tackles per contest. The former Louisville Cardinal was second on the Pirates with 51.5 tackles with 42 solo stops and 19 assists. He had two tackles for a loss, broke up 11 passes and recovered a fumble, returning it 45 yards for a touchdown vs. Columbus. In the Pirates playoff loss in Carolina, Williams made seven tackles, had an interception and recovered a fumble.
"My main goal is to come in this year and win an NAL Championship. That's the main goal and the only goal. Everything else will take care of itself. Losing by four (30-26 to Carolina in the playoffs) didn't feel good last year. We have the capability of go all the way and making it happen this year. I believe we can get a championship before it's all said and done. I'm just willing to do everything I can to make sure it happens this year," Williams said.
Pirates President and General Manager Jawad Yatim knows that Williams can be a cornerstone of the secondary this season.
"Chucky is a passionate, enthusiastic presence in our organization. He brings energy to our defense and plays with a tremendous amount of heart. As he gained experience last year, he became more comfortable in his role and it showed in our playoff game as he had an impressive performance down in Carolina. We're glad to have Chuck on board," Yatim said.
Last season was Williams first in arena football, and he said adjusting from the outdoor game did not happen overnight.
"I had no choice but to get acclimated as soon as possible, but I'd say, to get the basics down, it took at least four to five games. It wasn't easy," he said. He went on to say he got comfortable towards the end of the season and moving into the playoffs. "The scoreboard showed it. In arena football the offense is going to score a lot of points. The defense held up to where teams weren't scoring as many points. It became clear that at the end of the season, our guys were picking it up pretty well," he added.
A native of Miami, FL, Williams earned a reputation for being a big hitter on the team, but he makes it clear, that's only one aspect of his game.
"I'm all about the ball. I play with so much emotion and I want to be aggressive. I don't see myself as a "big hit guy." I play with a lot of heart and I feel like it shows when it comes to making those tackles. I want my opponent to know that I'm here and I want him to know that I will be here for the whole night.," he said.
As for taking that next step toward a title, Williams says continued improvement will get it done.
"I feel like toward the end of the season the secondary that we had really jelled together. We started making more plays and getting more comfortable with the cause. We had a great D-Line. I'm hopeful we'll get the same kind of D-Line back this year and just pick up where we left off; just learning from our mistakes and being willing to more forward in a positive direction, " he said.
In 2019 Williams signed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams and took part in OTA's and minicamp. The 6'2", 205 lbs. DB played four seasons of college ball at Louisville, appearing in 48 games. Williams finished his college career with 252 tackles, 13 for a loss, registered two sacks and nine interceptions along with five fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles. During his time there the Cardinals went 34 and 18, never losing more than five games in a season while going to four bowl games.
