Bristol White Sox News Release
Bristol White Sox first baseman Alex Williams had a rough night with four strikeouts in four plate appearances through eight inning, but Williams more than made up for it in the bottom of the ninth. Williams drove in Kale Kiser from first base with an RBI double as the Sox defeated the Johnson City Cardinals 4-3 for their third straight win, and second over the defending Appalachian League champions.
Lance Jeffries led off the top of the fifth with a triple for the Cardinals and later scored on a wild pitcher by Sox starting pitcher Euclides Leyer to give the Cards an early 1-0 lead. The Sox tied the game at one a piece when Courtney Hawkins scored on a Nick Basto sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. A Jake Brown single scored Jeremy Dowdy to put the Sox up by a run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Cards tied the game up at two in the next inning when C.J. McElroy stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error. McElroy later scored on another wild pitch by the Sox pitching staff. The Sox battled back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead once again as Basto scored on a Dowdy sacrifice fly to make the score 3-2 going into the top of the ninth.
Storm Throne came on for the Sox in the top of the ninth for the save attempt, but gave up a lead-off double to Jeremy Schaffer. Throne retired the next two batters on groundouts, but Bruce Caldwell, facing a two-strike deficit, doubled in Schaffer to tie the game at three.
The Sox came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth hoping for their second walk-off win in three days. Kiser collected a one-out single and Williams collected the big two-out double to improve the Sox to 5-9 on their three-game winning streak and to Cards fell to 6-8 on the young season.
The Sox will be back in action tomorrow for the final game of the three-game series against the Cards with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. The Sox will host the inaugural BVUOptinet Movies in the Ballpark Night with the showing of Moneyball, set to begin on the field approximately 30 minutes after the final out.
