
Wiley Allocated to Asheville Altitude

ASHEVILLE, N.C., November 3, 2004 - Derrick Wiley has been allocated to the defending NBDL champion Asheville Altitude according to an announcement by NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert and Altitude head coach Joey Meyer. A 2004 graduate of Eastern Carolina University, Wiley led the Pirates in scoring for two consecutive seasons averaging 14.8 points per game as a senior.
"We are excited to conclude this year?s allocations with Derrick," said Meyer. "He is a long wing guard that should bring a lot of athleticism to our team."
Wiley, 25, ranked among Conference USA leaders in scoring and rebounding during both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, he led the team in scoring 16 times, scored 20 points in seven games and registered five double-doubles.
Prior to joining the Pirates his junior season, Wiley competed two years at Moberly Community College. As a sophomore, he averaged 20.1 points and six rebounds and aided Moberly in capturing the Region XVI Tournament Title, earning all-tournament honors in the process.
Wiley is a native of Durham, NC, where he attended Bonner Academy in Raleigh. He averaged 26 points and 8.0 rebounds as a senior and was named team MVP and first team all-conference.
Each NBDL team is allocated two players, Shaw University forward Anthony Greenup was Asheville?s first allocation player of the season. Up to 17 players will report to training camps in each market on November 7, and a minimum of one allocation player is guaranteed a spot on each team?s final roster of 10 players.
The NBDL, the NBA?s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).
The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA?s umbrella. Twenty-eight (28) players have been callup up to the NBA on 39 separate occasions. Nine former NBDL coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league?s inaugural season in November 2001.
Designed to help grow the sort of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBA?s 30 teams and is a diverse human resource pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
