Texas Wildcatters News Release
Beaumont, TX (August 17, 2006) - The Texas Wildcatters Hockey Team, ECHL Affiliate of the Houston Aeros, is pleased to announce the signing of Brandin Cote. Cote comes to Southeast Texas after playing last season with the Nottingham Panthers in the British Elite League and the previous three with the Norfolk Admirals of the AHL. After a year stint in Europe, Cote is looking forward to his return in North American hockey.
"I'm really excited. Malcolm (Cameron) was very interested in me. He has been following the way I progressed last year," said Cote. "He presented a really good opportunity for me to come to Texas and be part of a winning team and have the chance for a lot of success."
Cote, 25, is extremely hard working, gritty and a very good skater. Signed as a free agent in 2002 by the Chicago Blackhawks, he spent three seasons in the AHL with Chicago's top affiliate leading Norfolk to the playoffs each year. He was an excellent checking forward who excelled at the penalty kill. Wildcatters Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Malcolm Cameron plans on using Cote as a valuable offensive weapon like he was in juniors.
"Brandin is a professional in every sense of the word. I am excited to have Brandin with us this year," said Cameron. "He will be a strong leader on and off the ice and teach our rookies the true meaning of being a professional."
Prior to his time in the AHL, the 5'10", 195 pound native of Swift Current, Alberta played six seasons in juniors with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League. During his tenure, he was captain of the Chiefs for three seasons and the WHL Face-off Man of the Year for the same period. Cote was also an All-Star twice and Humanitarian of the Year in 2002. At the age of 18, he won the gold medal for Team Canada under 18.
The new-look Wildcatters open their third season on October 20 at Florida, before returning to Ford Arena for the home opener on October 28 against the Pensacola Ice Pilots.
