South Georgia Wildcats News Release

(FAYETTEVILLE) – Football fans in the Cape Fear region got their first taste of the Cape Fear Wildcats today at the Crown Coliseum.

The Wildcats scored a late touchdown to pull out a 21-14 win over the Charleston Swamp Foxes, but it was the fans who were the real winners in the free-to-the-public, preseason arenafootball2 game.

An estimated crowd of more than 5,000 watched Charleston tie the game on a diving touchdown catch with one minute to play, but the Wildcats rallied with a four-play, 40-yard drive capped off by Vic Penn's 13-yard touchdown toss to Eddie Miller with just 24 seconds to play.

The game was scheduled for two fifteen-minute quarters, but both head coaches agreed prior to the game to extend it an extra period.

"We're pleased with the effort,' Wildcats head coach Chris Siegfried said, "but we still have a lot of work to do before we're ready to go to Norfolk (for the season opener)."

Miller, an af2 rookie from tiny Menlo College in California, led all receivers with six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

Penn, a former USC Gamecock who finished his college career at Central Florida, completed 7-of-13 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown. Gary Smeck, an NCAA Division III national championship winner at Mount Union in Ohio, completed 7-of-10 passes for 81 yards with one interception.

The Wildcats travel to Norfolk for the first regular season game in franchise history on April 6. The Swamp Foxes open the regular season on April 12 at Greensboro.

Wildcats season tickets start at just $48 and are on sale now. For more information call (910) 222-WILD or visit CATSFOOTBALL.com. Catch the Fever!
