Moncton Wildcats News Release
The Moncton Wildcats and the Memorial Cup will be part of the World Pond Hockey Championships to be held on Roulston Lake, in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick this weekend, February 16th to 18th. The Wildcats will play a pick-up game on Saturday and will display the Cup they plan to win May.
The 2006 edition of the championships is completely booked with 120 teams playing in a 4 on 4 round robin tournament, which begins on Thursday evening and winds up with the championship game on Sunday.
All ten provinces along with the two Canadian territories will be represented, as well as teams from 26 U.S. States and a total of 12 countries world wide. 40 teams will play on the 20 rinks simultaneously. Each rink measures 150 by 75 feet.
"This is one of the outstanding hockey events held in New Brunswick and with the Wildcats being the host team for the 2006 Master Card Memorial Cup in May, it is vitally important that our team and the Memorial Cup make an appearance in Plaster Rock," said Wildcats General Manager Bill Schurman. "Over 6000 people are expected to be in Plaster Rock over the weekend and the tournament provides a unique opportunity for hockey fans from around the world to see the famous Memorial Cup Trophy and meet some of the members of the number one ranked Junior Hockey team in Canada, the Moncton Wildcats," Schurman said.
Participation in the World Pond Hockey Championships, along with the Best Backyard Rink project, which Wildcats players will also visit on Saturday, makes for a busy weekend for the number one ranked team in Canadian Junior Hockey.
The Wildcats will face perennial rivals, the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday night at the Coliseum. On Sunday afternoon on home ice they face off against the Quebec Remparts, that game could well determine top spot in the QMJHL with the Wildcats, the Remparts and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens all battling for first place.
