Alaska Wild News Release
Anchorage, Alaska April 25, 2008
The Alaska Wild recently had two bye weeks to prepare for the San Angelo Stampede-Express, who have revenge on their minds from last year as the Wild defeated the Stampede-Express 64-53. The Wild already has a franchise record of 3 wins, now they look to push their season win total to 4 on the year. San Angelo is coming into the Sullivan Arena (Terror Dome) with a winless record and they are hungry for a big win versus the Wild. San Angelo's Coach Burdine will certainly have his team rocking and rolling when April 28th hits. Quarterback Davon Vinson has 157 passing yards, 3 passing touchdowns and 2 rushing touchdowns on the season. Other San Angelo solid contributors are wide receiver Chris Murray with 3 touchdowns, defensive back Terralle Bush with 17 tackles and 1 interception for a touchdown and linebacker Edwin James with 38 tackles. "We will have a fight on our hands," said AK Wild Head Coach Hans Deemer. "There's no way we are overlooking San Angelo."
The Alaska Wild has a defense that is living up to its team name. "We feel that our defense has the right tools to be the best in the IFL," said IFL interceptions leader and AK Wild DB #2 Demarcus James. James has 8 interceptions on the season and has been named IFL defensive player of the week twice this season. #22 James Griffin is second in the IFL with 5 interceptions . #55 George Noga leads the IFL in sacks with 5½. The Wild "D" is second in the Intense Football League in total team defense. "We're taking things one game at a time," said AK Wild Defensive Coordinator Abe Hernandez. "I know our defense is good, but we can always get better."
On the offense, there will be a different face at quarterback and his name is EJ Nemeth. Nemeth actually played with San Angelo early this season and threw 3 touchdowns for the Stampede-Express before getting released. Nemeth will fill-in for injured #9 Nick Mystrom. The Wild has four explosive wide receivers in #7 Nian Taylor (20 catches and 7 touchdowns), #8 Andre Velazquez (15 catches and 5 touchdowns), #12 Thomas Ford (13 catches and 7 total touchdowns) and dual-threat #14 Keith Smith (13 catches and 4 touchdowns). Smith (7 passing touchdowns at QB) might see time at quarterback on certain game situations against San Angelo. "I'm glad that we have options at quarterback and receivers that can adjust to our options," said AK Wild Head Coach Hans Deemer.
Fans don't miss out on Monday Night Intense Football; the Alaska Wild versus the San Angelo Stampede-Express, Monday April 28th at the Sullivan Arena. Pre-game is at 7pm (AST) and kickoff is at 7:30pm (AST). This game is sponsored by the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.
Alaska Professional Sports, Inc. and the Alaska Wild are proud to announce the addition of Fenumiai "Numi" Ilalio Jr. as the new General Manager. "I believe having a great football mind like Numi's will add to what good things we have in place already," said AK Wild Team President/CEO David Weatherholt.
Numi's has over 20 years of coaching experience which includes high school and semi-professional football. Numi is currently the assistant head coach for the Service High Cougar football program. He is a three-time Cook Inlet Football Conference assistant coach of the year recipient. Numi was the offensive coordinator for East Anchorage High school's 2003 championship football team. Numi primarily will work on football operations and help the coaches with player personnel decisions. He will also assist the coaches with practice sessions and on game day.
