Washington Wild Things News Release

The Richmond Roosters invaded Falconi Field and came away with their first win of the season, topping the Washington Wild Things by a score of 9-3 in the series opener. The loss dropped the Wild Things to 2-2 on the season and improved Richmond to 1-3.

It didn't take long for the Roosters to get started. Rafael Lara hit the second pitch of the game over the leftfield fence to put the Roosters up 1-0 early.

The Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, bounced back quickly, though, tying the game at one in the bottom of the first thanks to L.J. Biernbaum's sacrifice fly. The Wild Things took the lead in the third when Bill Greenwell drove in Mike Arbinger.

However, the Roosters posted four runs on four hits in the fourth inning, giving them a 6-2 lead they would hold to for the rest of the game.

Biernbaum picked up his second RBI of the game after an eighth inning solo homerun, but it was not enough for the Wild Things.

Wild Things' starting pitcher Doug Heagen allowed six runs and seven hits over five innings. Kyle Augusburger and Ryan Hartzell teamed for three scoreless innings in relief, but Eric Holt allowed three runs on three hits in the ninth inning.

For Richmond, Curt Moenter lasted 4 1/3 innings, and Chad Sosebee pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and earned the victory.

All nine Roosters reached base safely and seven of nine players scored at least one run.

The Wild Things will attempt to avenge the loss tomorrow night, May 26. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Gander Mountain will provide the first 1,000 fans with camouflage Wild Things' mesh caps. Tickets are still available.
