
Wild Things beat Rascals 5-3

WashingtonâThe Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Saving Bank, beat the River City Rascals 5-3 in front of a sellout crowd of 3,575 at Falconi Field Thursday evening.
The Wild Things scored first in the game in the second inning on Jay Coakley's opposite field solo home run off of Rascal starter Greg Modica. The homer was Coakley's 11th of the season.
River City tied the score at 1-1 when Josh Ury singled home Brian Weiss. Washington then executed well offensively in the bottom of the third. The inning was highlighted by Blake Woods RBI single, two stolen bases and his run scored. Jon Cahill, Josh Loggins, and Jay Coakley also had RBI's in the inning to increase the lead to 4-1. Jason Kane hit a home run in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 5-1.
The Rascals scored twice in the seventh inning off of Wild Things starting pitcher Matt McDonnell. John Denny and Brian Weiss had RBI singles. The Rascals rally was aided by two Wild Thing errors.
Bake Leonards then got out of a bases-loaded-jam to end the threat.
Anthony Kozol pitched the ninth inning to earn his league leading 12th save. McDonnell earned the win and is now 7-3. Modica took the loss. Modica's record is now 5-6.
In related news, the Wild Things signed Matt Rollins Thursday. Rollins is an outfielder from North Greenville College. Rollins, a four year letterman, was on the North Greenville squad and was voted best defensive player during the 2003 season. In 2000, Rollins won the freshman award with North Greenville. In his career with North Greenville, Rollins had a .319 average with 23 home runs and 100 RBI.
The Wild Things will complete their two game series against River City Friday evening at 7:05. Fridays are Party in the Park and include live entertainment and fireworks.
