Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes used a five-run eighth to come from behind and win their third straight game overall, defeating the San Jose Giants by a final of 7-6 at LoanMart Field on Thursday night.
A crucial two-run error sealed the Giants' fate, as the Quakes have now won ten straight head-to-head match-ups with San Jose.
Trailing 6-2 in the last of the eighth inning, Jared Walker opened the frame with a home run, his fourth of the year and second in as many nights, as Rancho made it a three-run game. Gavin Lux, who extended his personal hitting streak to a season-best 19 straight games with a first-inning triple, followed by singling. After an Omar Estevez fly-out, Cody Thomas walked to bring the tying run to the plate.
The Giants then replaced pitcher Franklin Van Gurp with right-hander Frank Rubio (0-1). Cristian Santana followed with a single, scoring Lux to make it 6-4. Jeren Kendall singled right behind Santana, plating Thomas to make it a one-score game. Logan Landon then reached on an error to load the bases, bringing Wong to the plate. Wong followed with what looked like an inning-ending double-play ball, but Giants' shortstop Brandon Van Horn's throw to first to try and complete the double-play went all the way to the fence in foul territory, allowing two runs to score and give the Quakes a 7-6 advantage.
Andre Scrubb (3-0), who tossed a scoreless eighth, worked around a two-out base-runner to close out the ninth.
Starting pitcher Ben Holmes was outstanding in his first start of the year for Rancho, allowing just one run on two hits over 3.2 innings, striking out eight without allowing a walk.
The Quakes (58-40, 23-5) will go for the three-game sweep on Friday, sending Max Gamboa (0-0) to the mound in his Cal League debut. San Jose will counter with Domenic Mazza (2-1) with game time scheduled for 7:05pm.
Friday will be Family RV One Dollar Family Feast Night, as hot dogs, Pepsi products and ice cream sandwiches will be just one dollar thanks to Family RV. Tickets to the game are available online at rcquakes.com or by calling (909) 481-5000. Go Quakes!
