Wenatchee Wild News Release
Fresno, CA. - A two-goal first period propelled the Wenatchee Wild to a 4-1 win over the Fresno Monsters Saturday night, completing the weekend sweep of their West Division rivals, before 5,714 at Selland Arena in Fresno, California.
The Wild scored the first goal of the game 6:45 in, as Trevor Stewart (East Wenatchee, Washington) took a centering feed out of the right corner from Jacob Barber (Dardenne Praire, Missouri), firing home his 2nd goal of the season, giving Wenatchee a 1-0 lead. They would double the lead at the very end of the opening period, as Barber banged home a power play goal just before the buzzer sounded. Barber's goal, his 15th of the year, was assisted by Chris Kerr (Penticton, British Columbia) and Noah Nelson (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin) at 19:59, putting the Wild up 2-0 after one.
Fresno got on the board early in the second, as Matt Salituro dribbled home a goal, assisted by Dan Sherer and Mitchell Snyder at 1:24, slicing the Wenatchee lead to 2-1. The Wild regained the two goal-lead as Max McHugh (Edgewood, Washington) finished off a nicepassing play on a 3-on-1 break, assisted by Jono Davis (La Verne, California) and Dylan Abood (Centennial, Colorado) at 12:09, for a 3-1 lead. The goal was McHugh's 15th of the season.
Stewart pick up a loose puck in the mid-slot and wristed home a turn-around shot for his second goal of the night, assisted by Kerr and Joe Sullivan (Las Vegas, Nevada) at 11:22 of the third, for a 4-1 advantage. The physical play would then ramp up a bit towards the end but the goal scoring did not and the Wild took home the 3-goal win.
Wenatchee Head Coach Bliss Littler liked the effort and thought the goal at the end of the first period gave his team a lift. "It's always nice to score in the last minute of a period" said Littler. "Sucks the wind out of a team. We played really well."
Wenatchee outshot the Monsters 29-20. Nick Schmit (Fargo, North Dakota) made 19 saves for the Wild and Macauley Haight made 25 stops for Fresno. Wenatchee was 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-of-3 on the penalty kill. The Wild sit atop the West Division with a record of 33-7-4, 15-2-1 on the road, while the Monsters slip to 12-26-6.
