Pensacola Pelicans News Release

Wow, what a game! The Pelicans and Aviators combined for 22 runs, 32 hits, 8 pitchers, 13 strikeouts, nine walks and two ejections in a marathon game tonight. Coastal Bend pulled out in front with a five run 8th inning to win 13-9. Pensacola started off hot, scoring two runs in the first inning when Bernard Caston scored off a wild pitch and then Juan Rocha scored off a George Branch single. Trino Aguilar would end the inning on a called strikeout check swing. Pelican's manager Bernie Carbo did not think he went around and let the home plate umpire know it. It didn't take Carbo long to say the wrong thing and he would be ejected from the game, his first time this season.

Coastal Bend had one of their five run innings in the 4th inning to take the lead 5-2. Matt Mann had a triple, Jack Joffrion doubled and Edwin Maldanado had the big hit, a three run homerun in the inning. An attempted pick off from catcher Jose Salas to first baseman George Branch resulted in a controversial safe call from the umpire. That did not sit well with Branch and would eventually be ejected as well after having a heated conversation with the umpire. That was at the beginning of the inning with all five runs being scored after that call.

Pensacola rallied back in the bottom of the 4th and scored four runs to retake the lead 6-5. In the inning, Joe Espada, off the bench for Branch, laid down a bunt, Aguilar doubled, Mike Pierre singled, Bernard Caston doubled, Juan Rocha singled and Nestor Smith doubled.

In the 6th for the Aviators, Mike Guerrero had a bases clearing three RBI double. In the bottom of the inning, Rocha doubled to score Pierre.

Pensacola scored two more in the 7th to take the lead 9-8. The inning was highlighted by a Larry Bethea homerun, his 11th of the season.

The Aviators finished off the Pelicans by scoring five more runs in the 8th inning. Two Pelicans errors along with three hits contributed to the five Aviators runs.
