WhiteWings Set Opening Day Roster

Harlingen - United League Baseball's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced today that they will open the regular season with 21 players on the active roster,including returning right-handed pitcher Juan Peralta (6-0, 190) and four non-roster invitees.

The non-roster invitees are left-handed pitcher Greg Conrad (6-6, 205, Lenoir-Rhyne University) infielder Jeff Toth (6-3, 210, College of New Jersey), outfielder Zach Staniewicz (6-3, 235, Concordia College) and closer Michael Barbosa (6-2, 215, Park University), who took part in the local tryout.

Additionally, outfielder Domenic Di Ricco (6-0, 185, Cornell University) is starting the season on the Inactive List with a hamstring injury suffered during Monday's pre-season win over the Edinburg Roadrunners at Harlingen Field. Left-handed pitcher Jason Moody (6-0, 215, Spartansburg Methodist University), is also opening the season on the Inactive List, but will still serve as the pitching coach.

The WhiteWings are expected to use a five-man starting rotation of David Cross (6-3,200, Virginia Tech), Luis Montano (6-0, 180), Misael DeJesus (6-3, 235), Stephen Whalen (6-2, 205, University of New Orleans) and Conrad.

In addition to Barbosa at the back end, the bullpen will consist of right-handers Freddy Ballestas (6-3, 220), Miguel Matos (6-4, 190), Andres Rosales (6-0, 214) and Peralta.

The WhiteWings are carrying 11 position players, in third baseman Eric Gonzalez(6-0, 200, UT-Brownsville), catcher Kevin Griffin (5-10, 195, Ferrum College),shortstop Jose Fulgencio (6-1, 162, New Jersey City University), catcher/first basemen Salvador Paniagua (6-1, 240) and Joel Roa (6-0, 175), infielders Brad Menadier (6-1, 195, Warner University) and Toth, and outfielders Kevin Dietrich(6-0, 190, UNC Pembroke), Javis Davis (5-10, 175), Arlon Quiroz (6-0, 170) and Staniewicz.

The WhiteWings open the regular season tomorrow at Veterans Field in Laredo against the Broncos at 7:35 p.m.

The WhiteWings are members of United League Baseball, an independent league of six professional baseball teams located in Texas that has sent two players to Major League Baseball in Edwar Ramirez (New York Yankees) and Robinson Cancel (New York Mets). In its fifth season, the United League is gearing up for a great summer with teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Harlingen, Laredo, Robstown and San Angelo.
