WhiteWings Keep Canseco in Check in Win Over Broncos

HARLINGEN - The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings held Jose Canseco 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in an 8-5 win over the Laredo Broncos on Monday at Harlingen Field.

The WhiteWings' (43-42) lead over the San Angelo Colts for the fourth and final playoff spot is now two and a half games and the WhiteWings magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to five. The WhiteWings are now winners of five-straight.

Canseco returns to Harlingen Field as the WhiteWings face the Broncos at Harlingen Field on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:05. Tickets range from $4-to-$8 and can be purchased online at whitewingsbaseball.com, by calling the WhiteWings at 423-WING (9464) or at the Harlingen Field box office starting at 10:00 a.m.

The Broncos (44-41) struck against David Cross in the top of the second. Jonathan Cisneros led off with a double and Salvador Paniagua hit an RBI-double to make it 1-0.

The WhiteWings responded against Santo Hernandez in the bottom of the second. Leivi Ventura drew a leadoff walk. One out later, Welington Dotel was hit by a pitch and Arlon Quiroz hit an RBI-single. After Eric Gonzalez hit a single, Roberto Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 WhiteWings.

Luany Sanchez led off the bottom of the third with a double. Yeurys Tejeda hit a flare to shallow left to advance Sanchez to third. Tejeda hustled into second base with a double. Ventura walked to load the bases, Welinson Baez hit a two-run single and Dotel hit an RBI-single to make it 5-1.

The Broncos got back in the board in the top of the seventh. Cisneros reached on an infield-single. One out later, Carlos Arroyo singled and Nick Mahin walked to load the bases. Ryan Flynn hit a bases-clearing double to make it 5-4.

Jonel Pacheco hit his fifth home run of the season leading off the top of the eighth to tie the game at 5-5.

The WhiteWings put runners at first and second with two outs in the top of the eighth and Sanchez hit an RBI-single against Maximinio de la Cruz (0-3). Javis Diaz stole home while Sanchez got caught in a rundown, during which the ball was thrown away, allowing Sanchez to move to second, form where he scored on a single by Tejeda to make it 8-5.

That made a winner of Ruben De La Rosa (2-1), who recorded the last two outs of the top of the eighth.

Mickey Cassidy pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save.
