
WhiteWings Ink Eight Pitchers

HARLINGEN - The North American League's Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings announced on Thursday that they have signed left-handed pitchers Chase Davenport (6'1, 215) and Jason Oatman (6'1, 190) along with right-handed pitchers Ramon Sanchez (6'3, 180), Kurt Houck (6'6, 210), Edgar Garcia(6'2, 190), Alexander Concepcion (6'1, 180), Elvis Hernandez (6'3, 180) and Andrew Wells (6'2, 190).
Davenport will make his professional debut for the WhiteWings this season. Davenport joins the 'Wings from Norfolk State University where he started 26 games in two seasons. Davenport went 10-11 during his time with the Spartans.
Oatman also enters his first professional season after a two year stint with the University of New Mexico. While at UNM, Oatman pitched 70.2 innings while earning a 5-3 record and one save. Oatman allowed only 21 earned runs in 38 innings last season with 38 strikeouts.
Sanchez is set for his seventh season of professional baseball and joins the WhiteWings after pitching with El Paso (American Association) last season. Sanchez was originally signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2003 and the Dominican Republic native advanced to AA during his career.
Houck enters his second professional season after a collegiate career at James Madison University. Houck saw action in nine games for the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League last season. While at JMU, Houck compiled a 13-12 record in 31 starts in three seasons for the Dukes. Houck was originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2004.
Garcia joins the WhiteWings after six seasons in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Garcia pitched with Clearwater (Florida State League) last season making 34 appearances over 93 innings. During his career Garcia made eight starts at the AA level and has pitched over 520 innings professionally.
Concepcion also joins the WhiteWings after spending time in the Phillies organization. Concepcion spent last season with Lehigh Valley of the International League (AAA) earning a 2-2 record while appearing in 23 games and making one start. Concepcion also earned time with Reading (Eastern League), Clearwater (Florida State League), Lakewood (South Atlantic League), and Batavia (New York-Penn League) during his six year career.
Hernandez spent four seasons in the St. Louis Cardinals organization before joining the 'Wings this season. Last year Hernandez split time between Palm Beach (Florida State League) and Springfield (Texas League) while hurling 29 innings. Hernandez has also taken to the mound for Quad Cities (Midwest League) and Johnson City (Appalachian League).
Wells will pitch his first full professional season with the WhiteWings this season after completing a collegiate career at Wagner College. After the conclusion of Wagner's season, Wells appeared with Evansville of the Frontier League for three games. Wells started his career with Siena College before transferring to Wagner to start the 2008 season.
The WhiteWings open the season with a four game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners at Edinburg Baseball Stadium May 25-through-28. The WhiteWings host the new McAllen Thunder in their home opening series from May 29-through-June 1.
