Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
EDMONTON - The Edmonton Capitals blew out the WhiteWings in game three of the North American League championship series by a score of 10-3 Saturday night at TELUS Field in Edmonton.
Using a big six-run first inning, the Capitals took a big lead early and never looked back. The Capitals posted 15 hits as they cruised to victory, taking a commanding 3-0 series lead over the WhiteWings. The WhiteWings are now one game away from elimination and in danger of being swept.
Logan Williamson (0-2, 9.00 ERA) took the loss for the WhiteWings while Rory Shortell grabbed the win.
Matt Rogelstad and Todd Linden both kick-started the big first by inning as they reached on singles before an error allowed the bases to become loaded. A catcher's obstruction call forced home the first run, giving the Caps a 1-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Carlos Duncan hit two runners when he singled, providing a 3-0 advantage. Tom Collaro, the very next batter, opened the game up when he hit a three-run homerun to put the Caps up for good at 6-0.
The Capitals scored twice in the third inning to extend their lead to 8-0. Tom Collaro and Matt Rogelstad were responsible for the runs, both recording RBI singles.
The WhiteWings, in the bottom half of the inning, tried to come up big but only managed two runs as they left the bases loaded. Landon Camp started the inning with a solo homerun to put the Wings on the scoreboard. An RBI double from Wilmer Pino brought home another run as the WhiteWings trailed 8-2.
The WhiteWings then loaded the bases after Leivi Ventura was hit by a pitch and Brian Nichols walked. Yet the WhiteWings stranded all three runners, unable to score anymore runs.
In return, the Caps scored two more runs - one each in the fourth and fifth innings - to extend their lead to 10-2.
The WhiteWings were unable to manage anymore offense, scoring only one more run.
The WhiteWings will try to avoid elimination tomorrow afternoon as the first pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM CDT at TELUS Field. Brian Henschel is expected to take the mound for the WhiteWings.
