Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings starting pitcher Joe Rogers allowed a single to Reynosa Buffaloes leadoff hitter Manuel Rodriguez, but that would be it for the Buffaloes as 11 WhiteWings pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout tonight at Harlingen Field.
Wings pitching combined to strikeout nine of the 28 batters who came to the plate in the seven-inning affair that included a five-out seventh to get more pitchers work. The Buffaloes managed to draw back-to-back walks off Derek Bennett with one out in the sixth, but Todd Lutz came in and got two infield pop-ups to end the threat.
The Wings pitching staff looked dominating, showing command of hard fastballs and an ability to control the strike zone as they issued just three walks.
The hitting was highlighted by three towering home runs to left field.
Omar Bramasco came up in the first inning and hit a solo-shot inside the foul pole.
Following back-to-back walks to start the third inning, Miguel Peguero took the first pitch he saw and smashed it beyond the fence.
Following a walk to Alejandro Martinez, Ryan Fox came up and hit the ball off the roof of the home clubhouse 20 feet beyond the left field fence.
The Wings sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits.
It wasn't all about power, though. In the second inning, Jermy Acey reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild throw. Following a ground out that advanced Acey to third, Kevin Griffin got hit by a pitch. Ninth-place hitter Andre Jordan came to the plate and manager Eddie Dennis called for a double-steal. Griffin took off for second and the throw beat him easily, causing Griffin to stop half-way. Acey raced home and beat the throw, which short-hopped the catcher, giving the Wings their second run of the evening.
The fielding was also exceptional. On Rodriguez's lead-off single, center fielder Bub Bergstrom flew in and almost made a full-frontal diving catch as he trapped the ball with his glove.
In the top of the third, Jordan, playing right field, threw to first on a soft-liner to him and gunned down the runner to end the inning. Jordan later made a diving, tumbling catch in the 6th inning, despite the 9-0 score at the time.
Second baseman Jermy Acey showed tremendous range to his right, making two back-handed plays, including a tough one where he threw running away from first base to end the game.
Bergstrom showed he can be a stolen base threat as well, getting a great lead off first in the third inning and stealing second without a throw.
The WhiteWings will open the season with a three-game series at home on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Amarillo Dillas.
