Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Edinburg, TX - The first-half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (31-25, 2-4) made things interesting in the ninth inning, plating a run and putting the go-ahead run on base with nobody out, but the Edinburg Coyotes (28-27, 3-2) held on to win 5-4 tonight at Edinburg Stadium.
The WhiteWings got things going in the first inning again. Bub Bergstrom led off with a walk and Kevin Griffin singled against Eric Montoya (5-0). Omar Bramasco grounded into a fielder's choice to knock in the run and make it 1-0 WhiteWings.
In the second, the Andre Jordan executed a perfect hit and run with two outs and Brian Nichols on first after a single. With runners at the corners and a 1-0 count on Bergstrom, Jordan took off for second. Catcher Luis Espinosa threw to second and Jordan stopped half way. He got caught in a rundown long enough for Nichols to score and make it 2-0 WhiteWings.
In the third, Bramasco again drove in Bergstrom to make it 3-0. Bergstrom walked again, but this time he stole second before getting doubled home.
The Coyotes struck back in the bottom of the fourth when Alexis Hernandez led off with a walk and Luis Espinosa hit a one out double against Julian Williams (2-3). Patrick Gaylord walked to load the bases. Adam Bonner hit a potential double play ball to second, but Kevin Griffin, playing there for the first time, couldn't handle the ball and let it go into right field to score two runs.
They came back to take the lead in the sixth when Eric Gonzalez doubled, Luis Espinosa reached on a bunt and Patrick Gaylord hit a sacrifice fly. Adam Bonner hit an RBI double to tie the game and chase Williams. Chris Gale came in and got a ground out from Nick Aranda, but Angelo Fermin pushed a bunt to the right side and beat it out to send Bonner home and make it 5-3 Coyotes.
The Coyotes turned to Julio Casto for 14th save in the ninth, but not without drama. Bergstrom drew his fifth walk and Griffin singled. Bramasco drove home a run with a single to make it 5-4, but Castro settled down to strike out two of the final three batters.
The WhiteWings will return home to face the Laredo Broncos for the first of three tomorrow night at 7:05. Joey Cress (3-3) will face Brian Daly (3-4)
