Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Edinburg, TX - Edinburg Coyotes (16-13) catcher Luis Espinosa had a big day, starting one rally and ending another, as he hit a walk-off single to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (16-12) in a 5-5 tonight at Edinburg Stadium.
Rodney Medina led off the bottom of the ninth with a nine pitch walk in which he fouled away three two-strike pitches. After he stole second base, reliever Chris Gale (2-1) got Barrett Rice to hit an infield pop-out. The WhiteWings turned to closer Derek Bennett to hold the tie, but Espinosa lined the first pitch down the right field line to end the game.
It was only the second walk Gale had issued all season, the first of the outing, as he pitched five innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
Adam Clay (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
The WhiteWings started the scoring right off the bat as Bub Bergstrom, after taking some extra batting practice, led off with a single. After a steal of second base, David Cardona and Ryan Fox came up with back-to-back one-out RBI-doubles to put the WhiteWings up 2-0 off Coyotes starter Neomar Flores.
WhiteWings starter Danny Bonilla followed by setting down each of the first six batters he faced , touching 87 MPH on the stadium radar gun.
Flores settled down in the second, pitching around two errors to strike out the side.
In the third, however, Bonilla came apart.
Espinosa drew a leadoff walk. Eddie Wilson followed with a single and Jorge Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Eric Gonzalez grounded out to advance every runner and score a run.
Nick Aranda drove in the remaining runners with a single, advancing to second on the throw to the plate. Nelson Teilon capped the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-2 Coyotes.
Bonilla ended up leaving injured with one out in the fourth. Gale replaced him and completed the 1-2-3 inning.
The WhiteWings were going down without much of a fight against Flores until the seventh, when Alejandro Martinez fouled away five two-strike pitches while working out a ten-pitch single. Omar Bramasco followed with a two-out home run over the left-center field wall, his second of the season, to tie the game 4-4.
Flores ended up striking out ten and not walking anyone in seven and a third innings.
The WhiteWings and Coyotes will conclude their first-half series tomorrow night at 7:05 as Joe Rogers (4-1) will face Aaron Guerra (5-1).
