Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC are pleased to announce that the club will be partnering with Canada SCORES Vancouver.
Canada SCORES Vancouver (CSV), a not-for-profit society, helps at-risk students find their voice, achieve their goals, and reach their full potential through an after-school program featuring the game of soccer, the art of poetry, and a community service component. CSV looks to inspire, engage, and make a difference to at-risk urban students allowing them to lead healthy, productive, and confident lives.
This season, Vancouver Whitecaps FC established two predominant community charitable streams: Mental Health and Cancer Research and Prevention. In alignment with the club's Mental Health initiatives, CSV gives support to at-risk youth in the local community.
"Canada SCORES Vancouver is about creating opportunities for children and youth," said Bob Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps FC president. "We're very honoured to begin this relationship, and be part of the first SCORES program in Canada. "
The partnership between Whitecaps FC and CSV will enhance the experience of the youth participating in the program in many ways. CSV will benefit from the contribution of player appearances, tickets for the students and their families, equipment and clothing in support of the program, and a financial contribution from Whitecaps FC Foundation.
"We are very excited to start the after-school program for in-need grade 3-5 students in the Burnaby School district with the support of Vancouver Whitecaps FC. " said Mark Mahl, Canada Scores Vancouver executive director. "The club's involvement is key to our start-up success, as it is pivotal for the development of these young students to be engaged with such strong role models in the sport of soccer."
CSV is based on the model pioneered by America SCORES in the United States of America. The America SCORES model was developed in 1994 in Washington D.C. by Julie Kennedy, a public school teacher concerned that her students were lacking constructive after-school options and were at risk of gang activity and other dangers after class. America SCORES has had huge success and today impacts more than 7,500 youth each year, in over 140 public schools across the USA. Major League Soccer partners of America SCORES include Seattle Sounders FC, New England Revolution, Chicago Fire, and LA Galaxy. Modeled on this success, Vancouver will be the first MLS city in Canada to start a SCORES program.
